I went to pay for gas yesterday using $5 in quarters and $5 in dimes. The clerk and I counted the change out. Well, he shoved a dime back at me and said he wouldn't accept because it wasn't an American coin. It happened to be a Canadian dime. I said it's a dime. He said again it's not American and I won't accept it. I said we accept them where I work and I've never heard of that policy before. He said lady, I don't know what your problem is; it's not American and I won't accept it. I gave him an "American" dime for that Canadian dime. Then he told me I was $.20 short. I know that's not true because I work with money and I know how to count change. I'd counted the money several times before I put it in a baggie to take to the station. Well, needless to say, I won't be going back to that Fastop even though it is convenient to my place of employment. I really hope he is dealt with and discharged for his rude conduct. This happened Feb. 7, 2012 about 3pm.
Darlene, Arden, NC

"..he wouldn't accept it because it WASN'T American". "It happened to be a Canadian dime". Next time you get paid, see if you'll accept pesos or euros from your bank. I won't even go into the rest of it.

We live in the united states. We do not live in canada. The accepted currency here is US currency. When I worked at a convience store I wouldnt accept canadian money either.
Besides, your canadian dime is only worth about 9 cents in american money, so you were trying to short him.
get over yourself.

He doesn't have to except your canadian dime, the only reason most due is it is so close to ours that they really don't pay attention to it.Of course i think it's nitpicking on his part, but you made more out of this than it is worth, and as far as being .20 cents short if 20cents is going to make or break either of you,you are in deep trouble.

Canadians find this flat out hilarious!
When we get US money in canada in Canada Americans freak that we wont accept it or charge a service fee.
But the same person will not acept Canadian money in the US.
Now a USA resident gets the tratment and doesen't get it.
Ive been treated this way over a single penny. ;)

We do except them for the most part, like i said the guy was just nit-picking.I know i have gotten alot of canadian coins over the years when getting back change from a purchase, and then I just pass them on,and not once in 60 years have I been told,we don't take them.
