Lost car keys to my Camaro. I called Lexington Locksmith to see if they had a code reader to make a replacement key. On the telephone he claimed he did and it was advertise on his van. Later that day he made a key that requires a chip inside the key and then the alarm would need to be reprogram. When he made the key and tried it the horn and headlights flashed on and off. He open the alarm box and unhooked a wire to disconnect horn. Now the headlights stays on the entire the Camaro is on and when I parked it the headlights blinks on and off for a couple of minutes. He had not a clue how to program the alarm system Now the remote does not work and I will have to pay several hundred dollars to repair the Camaro at a dealer. I was charged almost $200.00 dollars with my triple a discount. I would not suggest anyone to use this service. Looking inside the van was a key makers and a wall full of blank keys. No code reader seen or was used. Finally, my trunk key now stick in the key hole and sometimes takes a long time to get out. I feel I was a victim of a scam.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

An unaffilliated Locksmith Responds:

AUTHOR: Jeff - Boulder (U.S.A.)

Customer was not satisfied, that is duly noted.

It appears there was some miscommunication, and lack of understanding of scope of work involvedd.

There is no such thing as a "codereader". Complainant probably is referring to a device called an "interogator".

This is a device that is either connected to a special key blade, or directly under the dash to the connector that leads up to the lock.

The purpose of this tool is to replicate each of the possible resister values that a key can possess. After each attempt, a timer is set to wait out a delay, until next value is attempted.

When correct value is determined, a key that has been fit to the mechanical cuts of the key may be produced.

The alarm, if factory equipped with vehicle, likely operates via the door lock, or remote.

If alarm or antitheft system was altered to aftermarket, it can not be expected that every locksmith will have the ability or parts to service an altered vehicle.

200.00 to do the job, would be about right. If the alarm is factory, there would have been instructions on its' operation in the glove box, in owners' manual. He/She should have referred to it.

So, I can not say for sure if this complainant was wrong or right, but he sure was unhappy. Mostly, this was likely due to a lack of communication, or possibly unreal expectations. More specific detail would be needed to concude it was a rip off, or even BAD servicce.

#2 Owner of Company

Customer did not follow directions

AUTHOR: Lexington Locksmith - Lexington (U.S.A.)

There is no code reader. I used a interrogator to find out the value of the computer chip (vats) This is a long and time consuming process. The customer is out side of my service aria. this is why the price was $200.00.

I did not make a trunk key or the price would have been a additional $35.00.

The alarm was a after market alarm and can only be shut down by the remote that was lost with the key. What I did was take out the fuse to the alarm and instructed the customer to take it to someone who could get him another remote or new how to turn off the alarm. I suggested a local company that installs alarms. He was told that it was just to get him to the alarm store.

The customer also reported me to the Better Business Bureau. They did a mediation and they ruled that I right and that he should take car to a alarm installer.
