Several months ago I went to the doctor to have them look at my knee. I had been having some pain in it after falling. The doctor checked me out and said he didn't see anything but told me to "Try Out" this new TENS unit by Empi.
A few minutes later the nurse came in with the box and a knee brace TENS until. She walked me through the instuction on how to use it then told me that if I didn't like it, I could return it using the supplied package.
She did inform me that insurance will usually pay for the device if I decide to keep it. I took it home and tried it out for a few weeks but really didn't see anything worth $800.
Before the month was up I got a call from a rep at Empi asking what I thought. I informed her that it was okay but wasn't really seeing any change. She told me to go ahead and keep to and try it for another month and then she would call me back.
I tried it out a few more times and decided it wasn't just wan't doing anything and returned it using the inclosed package. Two months later I got two bills from Empi for the amount my insurance didn't cover. Not know what this was for I contacted Empi.
The lady I spoke with, Audrey, looked at my account and said she saw where I returned it and would take away the second bill. When I told her that I was never told about any fee she quickly responded "The units are not free" it was disclosed to me in all the paperwork that I signed that I would be responsible for any charges the insurance company didn't cover.
I was informed I would be responsible for any charges if I decided to keep the unit. I was never informed by the nurse or the Empi rep that called me that there was a "Rental" fee of close to $150 a month.
Do not take one of these units unless you plan to pay. No wonder my insurance keeps going up when they have to pay for things like this.
