Fitness First Health Clubs Added annual fee, contract does not say fees can be added or modified Reston Virginia

I joined Fitness First Health Clubs in Reston, VA in May of 2008 with a 1 year contract. Today, February 16, 2009, an email was sent to the customers stating that "an annual club enhancement fee of $20 per member" will be included with our March 2009 dues. I have a copy of my contract and it does not state in any spot that they are allowed to add or modify any fees.

This fee is small, but I can't help but feel that they are not acting legally. I have to abide by the fees in the contract, they should have to also.

When I called the corporate number, provided, this afternoon I was told that "there is nothing in the contract that says they can't do this."
