The product you have has a one year warranty.  The extended service plan is irrelevant in year one.   The power supply or other electrical issue with your system should be covered - go to the Sony website and find a "local" repair center or call Sony cust support as to how to get it fixed under warranty.  (I don't understand how there could be liquid damage in a surround sound system?).  Let's get Worst Buy out of the equation.

Cancel your contract by calling the toll-free number on the plan paperwork.

I know it is easy to accuse a big corporation like BestBuy of not honoring a warranty, and trying to get out of it by sabotaging a product, but it makes no sense on so many levels.

Number one, as IntheKnow stated, the first year is covered by the manufacturer. So BestBuy has no reason to try to get out of it.

Number two, I am an electrical engineer, and white on the circuit board is a sign of water damage, and green buildup can be mold, or possibly corrosion build up, and this kind of damage is built up over time. I don't think BestBuy would risk inventing some kind of process to mimic water damage just to get out of servicing a product that is covered under warranty. A warranty means the product is covered, it would cost Bestbuy almost nothing to repair or replace it, since it was still under warranty..see my point?. And I am sure they would prefer a happy customer who has a history of buying stuff there, then to make a customer unhappy where it would cost them almost nothing to please, and lose a customer for life. How would a business last that way? BestBuy is one of the few that is strong during a recession, there has to be a reason..right? Ask Circuit City.

Number three, regardless of how the water damage occurred, the manufacturer will most likely refuse to warranty it also. Unless a device is guaranteed to be water proof, no one will cover those kinds of damages. Electronics and water do not mix.

BestBuy can not send that unit back to Sony with water damage, and expect to have a replacement shipped free of charge..because water damage is NOT covered under anyones warranty in this case. If any damage was covered, as stated, it would not cost bestbuy that much if anything to repair or replace since it is covered. So simple, why look for ways to make it complicated?

I would seriously look where the unit was placed in your house. If there is no way possible this could have happened there, you would have to prove BestBuy did this with intent, or there is water leaking where they had it stored and this caused the damage. Since you brought the unit in not working to begin with, there apparently is a reason it went bad. Does anyone really believe BestBuy would intentionally damage it further with water to get out of the manufacturers warranty which still covers it?

Sounds a little far fetched to me, sorry to say. And if anything was damaged due to water damage where BestBuy had it kept, that would be covered by their insurance, it also would not be worth an unhappy customer to not claim it if this was the case. This is not the way bestbuy became such a success.

All said and good Ronny, but water damage on a surround sound system - indoors?  If customer went to the length to file this report and did spill liquids in the unit, then I certainly would retract.   But Best Buy, by the number of issues not only on this blog but on others, is by far angelic as a retailer. 

When a service center is turned into a court and judgement passed on the consumer, then that itself is awful customer service.    How about the attitude "you came to my service center with a problem and we'll take care of you."  Best Buy's market share in a number of categories has eroded to Wal-Mart.

Try shopping at any of the warehouse clubs where they treat members as gold. 
The difference is striking.

It is not rare for someone to spill something indoors either, but I will not make accusations here, I am looking at this as what is more likely.

BestBuy has 122 reports here. Walmart has 799. However, if you read through these reports un-biased, you will note almost every report is regarding a customer who is not happy with a policy that was in place when they made the purchase, not fraud by the retailer.

I admit Bestbuys polices are a bit stricker for returns then others, but Bestbuy does not have the buying power, hence works on a smaller NOP then some of these big warehouse type places. And, Bestbuy pays it's employees much better.

Many times what a customer claims is "awful customer service", is no better then blaming the messenger because they don't like the message.

If Walmart or Costco, or Sams club will warranty a Stereo that has water damage, that is one thing, but I do not know anyone who does this.

And has I stated since this posters Sony was still covered under manufacturers warranty, what would Bestbuy have to gain by further damaging it with liquid just to avoid honoring the warranty? It makes no sense at all.

Most likely this customer is simply unhappy that SONY, does not cover water damage, however it happened, which is not very likely BestBuy would do this intentionally, why would the employees do this? There is nothing to be gained and everything to be lost if any company did this out of spite and for no other logical or realistic reason.

I guess during your 6 years, you were not aware of the legal troubles Best Buy has had with some States Attorney General; illegally using software (copyright infringement by Geek Squad) and some unsavory business practices (duplicate Best Buy website with “alternative” pricing higher than what was on the “public” Best Buy website.)  When customers complained that the in-store price was higher than advertised on the “public” website, the associate would “go online” (actually an IN-HOUSE intranet site) to a different website to show the customer that he or she was mistaken!  Real ethical stuff!!!

Wow!  From Best Buy associate and trainer to electrical engineer!  Whoooeeeh.  BTW O Great and Powerful Roz, the Best Buy customer stated that the stuff was on the OUTSIDE of the surround sound when Best Buy gave the item back.  No where did the customer’s ROR state anything about “white on a circuit board.”  It was white stuff on the OUTSIDE, as well as a water mark, and green stuff on the power cord!!!  But hey, you were too busy defending Best Buy and blaming the customer to even READ the ROR correctly.

Of course not.  Neither was the “double website capper” or the illegal use of diagnostic and utility software!  Yeah, Best Buy is a “stand up company.”  Go do a search for some lawsuits against Best Buy and read up on their past antics.

BestBuy actually has more then 122 complaints. Since I use bestbuycom, I searched it as one word. If you search it as two words, Best Buy, it goes up to over 1330 complaints on this site. In all fairness I felt I needed to post that.

That is a lot. I can agree that they may need to improve their customer service if too many customers feel it needs improvement.

This still doesn't mean they are resorting to sabotaging product in order to get out of honoring a manufacturers warranty, but it could mean they can use a little work on the perception they may be giving to some customers.

It's not easy being in retail. There are so many people that pull scams that it could easily drive a company out of business. Most of the policies are put in place to protect the business from being scammed. If everyone was honest and ethical, they and other companies wouldn't even need policies that sometimes can hurt the innocent.

But there is a big difference between a customer not liking a policy, and accusing them of sabotaging product, that I do not see this as likely. The company does feel the competition of Walmart, and Amazon, which is who they consider their biggest threat. They only way it can compete, is by pleasing customers. And trust me, they know this darn well. It is all they talk about at meetings and trainings, which the meetings and trainings themselves cost the company millions.

And I am not sure this right of him using it to divert the topic of complaints lodged here.

But I do have a right to defend myself and correct false statements and slander used against me personally, so I will exercise that right...and apologize to the OP for using this post to do so in advance..

What does that have to do with this report? That issue was regarding misinterpretation of price match policies and I am no way defending Bestbuy regarding that case. Again, what does this have to do with this report, which is accusing an employee of manufacturing some kind of water damage to further damage an already non functioning sound system that is covered under warranty? The post did state there is liquid on the inside, white stuff on the side and green, whatever, it is EVIDENT there is liquid and possible signs of corrosion which would indicate it was there for a length of time. No one is debating whether or not BestBuy has had it's share of problems and growing pains. This is only happening in the little voices inside of your head.

Best Buy shares climbed the most in almost 10 months in New York trading on Mar. 25 after the retailer's fourth-quarter profit and full-year earnings forecast exceeded analysts' estimates. Earnings per share (EPS) rose to $1.82 in the quarter ended Feb. 27, the company said. Analysts projected $1.79, the average of estimates compiled by Bloomberg. U.S. same-store sales advanced 7.4% after Best Buy cut prices of flat-panel TVs before the Super Bowl on Feb. 7 and offered discounts during the holidays. How and why would the earnings be increasing, if BestBuy was such a horrible place to shop? Not that your "opinion" means anything, or that they once had a price match issue with the website implies they are a cooked business, but the evidence speaks for itself. In all fairness, we have to look at every side of an issue or compliant.

Now Robert from Buffalo may think I was just defending BestBuy, but I would of had the same stance had this been ANY retailer. Robert is harping on 2 issues BestBuy had, One was from back in 2006, where GeekSquad was allegedly using a pirated version of diagnostic/system recovery computer software. If this is the case, of course it was wrong of them. However, Bestbuy ended up to an agreement with the software company, and continued under agreement to use the software...

ITjungle.com   On July 10, 2006 Winternals and Best Buy announced a resolution to their differences. As part of the settlement, the two companies entered into a three-year business relationship whereby the Geek Squad are licensed to use a variety of Winternals and Sysinternals programs, including ERD Commander. Complete terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

The lawsuit should end following a July 7th motion from Winternals lawyer David Weaver, who cited a settlement agreement reached between the company and Best Buy, which owns Geek Squad.

Instead of a lengthy lawsuit, Winternals now has a three-year agreement in place with Best Buy. This will permit its Geek Squad of tech assistance personnel to lawfully use licensed programs from Winternals and Sysinternals. This includes the ERD Commander system recovery tool.

The other issue Robert is harping on, is regarding alleged "bait and switch" type tactics used to get out of honoring their price match guarantee. Since this case is still ongoing, it is hard to comment on it until all the facts are released. Witnesses consist of two ex employees, yeah, I am sure two ex employees have no bias. See wiki for more info.

If in the worst case BestBuy did intentionally defraud any customers by not honoring the price match as stated in the terms, surely they will have to pay up. Of course the media hype and biased bloggers will only tell one side and make Besybuy look like a ripoff, but most of these cases were simply people that did not understand how the price match works. But I hold comments and debate until the details of the case are exposed. We know what they are "accused" of, but we do not know what they are "guilty" of yet, so it is a waste to debate the unknown and undecided, or use this for, or against them at this time. I will agree as it looks bad for the banks that are currently in a lawsuit, it is not looking good for BestBuy either. If it were frivolous, I doubt it would have made it to trial.

Regardless I am not defending Bestbuy in attempt to discredit this report. I am just looking at every side with fairness, logic and reasoning, and not bias. And defending my points that Robert has so poorly tried to discredit.

Now in this situation regarding the report.

Lets look at both sides. A company that has started in 1966 (it was not called BestBuy then, but was the founders first store), has some complaints against them. The company grows from one store, to well over 1000 national and worldwide.

As a huge retailer, every day they have to deal with people trying to scam them. Returning items in a box and putting a different item in the box, trying to get out of warranty issues that are not covered under warranty, trying to return used movies, software and DVD's in attempt to get a free rental. Using cameras and GPS units for a trip, then returning it etc. ANYONE in retail can vouch for this. And those out there who do this..you know who you are, and they know who you are. And YOU made it bad for everyone else.

That aside, whether or not this customer has a case, look at it from a logical and reasonable standpoint.

WHICH is more likely? That the non operating sound system that was STILL under manufacturers warranty, is intentionally further damaged and sabotaged by BestBuy with some form of technique that can mimic liquid damage over a time period, or...

 ..that a customer somehow spilled something on it, or water leaking on it from a bad roof or whatever, causing water damage that BestBuy or the manufacturer do not cover?

Perhaps this poster has home owners insurance that will cover it? Or, and this is highly unethical, take the unit apart, clean it up real good, and send it into SONY not mentioning the water damage, in hopes they don't find signs of it.

Or you can accuse bestBuy of this ludicrous action, gather up a witch hunt of BestBuy bashers on a forum, but still be out of a sound system.

I was duped. Best Buy's Geek Squad is very unprofessional and many times seem to not know the symptoms of problems with computers. I myself will never go to them to get a computer repaired. I was at a Best Buy recently and happened to overhear one of them telling a female customer some really off-the-wall lies about a problem she was having with her pc. What they were telling her had NOTHING to do with the particular issue that was going on with the pc. I have been repairing pc's for over 15 years and I just could not stand by and let them get away with what they were doing. I had a few words with them about and they got really rude and threatened to have me thrown out of the store. Also, they have been known to unecessarily replace parts that didn't need to be replaced and charge ridiculous fees for the repairs. I do not recommend Geek Squad to anyone.

He left this same nonsense on several reports. It seems to be some kind of attempt to discredit me..but it falls so very very short. First off it claims of hypocrisy yet he uses posts from different reports that are regarding separate instances and situations to prove I am a liar..but it FAILED.

Robert, you should actually read the reports before you try to use any to slander someone..it makes you look kind of foolish.

One reply he pasted was from someone else's report back in August of 2009 which I commented on, when I lived in Silverlake, and one was very recent and a report I personally lodged regarding when I was driving home from work to where I currently live in NORTH HOLLYWOOD. Seemingly? What does that mean? Can you back up with any evidence what I know or do not know regarding copyrighting a text book? First of all, I wrote the textbook for a school that I was teaching at. They handled the copyrights through a copyright attorney. I had my attorney look it over, and we came to an agreement. I never claimed to be a copyright expert. Writing a textbook, music, a screenplay etc has nothing to do with how much you know about copyright law. And that is why they have copyright attorneys. The report you are referring too, which has NOTHING to do with this debate about bank policies, was a complaint lodged regarding a customer at Walmart who was told they can not return an open DVD for a refund, and a debate regrading if it was because it was prohibited by federal law. I agree that this was store policy and not necessarily anything to do with a federal law.

So we were in agreement, I simply chose to investigate it, post evidence, and look at all sides. YOU on the other hand.."claimed" to be an expert in copyright law, based solely on your "claim" that you wrote some software back in the 1980's.

legal troubles Best Buy has had with some States Attorney General;
illegally using software (copyright infringement by Geek Squad) and some
unsavory business practices (duplicate Best Buy website with
“alternative” pricing higher than what was on the “public” Best Buy
website.)  When customers complained that the
in-store price was higher than advertised on the “public” website, the
associate would “go online” (actually an IN-HOUSE intranet site) to a
different website to show the customer that he or she was mistaken!  Real ethical stuff!!!

Yes..I have been associated with this company for six
years...including being a district trainer..so i know how it works...

Really?  Does this mean you were
party to the copyright infringers?  Did you train
Geek Squaders how to use software that Best Buy was using illegally?  Did you help set-up the TWO websites that Best Buy
had, or just the “in house” one that associates showed customers with a
HIGHER item price than the “public” Best Buy website?

I have worked with BestBuys across the nation..and
there are different cultures in different locations regardless of SOP.

The issues BestBuy had can be found at Wikipedia Bestbuy. As far as the software issue, it was resolved and the software company ended up in an agreement with BestBuy to use the software, that is how it ended, nothing else is disclosed, no news here.

As far as the duplicate website, I have nothing to do with that and I don't know why that is being brought up in a debate about bank policy. This was addressed back in 2007.. "In response, Best Buy spokesperson Sue Busch indicated the in-store
kiosks were not intended for price-match purposes and rather a means to
navigate in-store availability. Since the initial investigation, a
banner was placed on the in-store site to make its customers more aware
of the difference."

And that is as much as I know, or care about that. When I shop online..I do it at home and print it out. If Best Buy was using any tactics with intent to decieve customers, I certainly as a consumer advocate do not defend it. I only know the policies as I was told when I did any work for them. Which was "have the customer bring in a copy from bestbuy.com of the price, and we will match it in the store". Doesn't seem like rocket science to me.

Why Robert is bringing this up here, I have no idea..but I responded to a report in which a customer brought in a sound system that was non-functioning. The system was still under manufacturers warranty. The customer was denied because the system had liquid inside of it, and signs of mold/corrosion etc on the side and cord. So the customer was accusing Bestbuy of doing this with intent.

I am sure this company has nothing to gain by further damaging and already non functioning unit, that is COVERED under the manufacturers warranty, just to rip them off. No company could survive this way. How many other reports are there of Bestbuy or any large retailer doing something like this to a piece of equipment that is currently covered under the manufacturers warranty?

So what do these trolls do? Insult her for being vain. The doctor charged her $20,000 for a procedure she did not want, and was told she was not getting. When she tried to cancel after realizing she was not getting the procedure as she was told she was, they would not refund a penny. I felt that was wrong..forgive me Robert.

Okay, here we go again. Robert aka Kojak the copyright attorney is bringing up a report that is unrelated, and irrelevant. Anyone can click on the link Robert was kind enough to leave. And they will clearly see, that the bank was ADVERTISING on Aeromexico's website. Hence, the bank must honor what they advertised, or face a false advertising charge. This was NOT an ad placed by Aeromexico on the banks website..but an ad placed by the bank on Aeromexico's website. If the bank will not honor their own ad, and customers sign up with that bank or any offers implied, then the bank must honor the offer. If the ad was fraudulent and the customer signs up, surely at the time of sign up, the bank would have some responsibility to tell the customer the ad is a fraud, if indeed it was.

Oh, I can tell by that reply that you probably are an electrician, and an antiquated one at that. And yes, the wiring in older automobiles is quite simple,,but not exactly sorting red, black and green wires..there is a bit more to it then that. I don't know any vehicles I have ever restored that only use 3 colors..that is reserved for old school A/C electricians..which as I stated, I have been one in the past. I was able to get into the union while I was in school since close family members were in it. And the test was not very difficult to pass.. it was essentially based on the same principles used since Thomas Edison was experimenting with the phonograph.

But if you even try to get into a debate with me about current automotive technology, I will make you look like even a bigger fool then you are making yourself look like. You do realize that late model vehicles, which I train others how to integrate with, incorporate data bus systems, LAN systems, M.O.S.T. systems, and fiber optics to name a few? Robert, it is basically being a software engineer on top of everything else, it is not like twisting wires together where all you had to figure out was which was neutral...and use pliers and wire nuts. Yes Robert. It is ALL related. D/C based technology. Guess what most vehicles use as a power source? I will tell you. A D/C battery. Which applies to...the textbook I wrote, the articles I have published, the degree I have, and what I have been teaching in schools, and... for corporations that sell and install DC operated products. The customer stated Best Buy noticed LIQUID on the INSIDE, and white stuff on the side, and green stuff on the power cord. What more do you need to be satisfied that this unit has liquid in it? However, it is a TRUE statement that white residue on a circuit board indicates liquid. Since this was already discussed, go back several hundred replies to see my response to this. Why does Robert think this is relevant to this report? And I never stated Best Buy was a "stand up company" in those terms so why do you put it in quotes? I simply choose to look at all sides of an accusation before condemning. Imagine that? Due process, reasoning and fairness??? I guess that is something you have never had in your life..so you think no one else should utilize it.

All you have accomplished here, is to post links to THE same report where we are already at, or reports that are unrelated to the topic here, and to COMPLETELY divert the topic, and ruin any credibility it may of had. And, to posts where I have debated and stood my ground. I don't know what you wanted to accomplish..maybe to make the bank defenders proud? Either way, I don't think anyone could care less.

It just makes you look desperate and like you have some kind of grudge against me, like apparently you do against Best Buy and Walmart because they don't allow you to have free rentals of DVD's and software.

The geek squad precinct is where you go for repairs and upgrades. So if you overheard all this, you had to be on line. What did you need geek squad for if you have been repairing computers for 15 years?

Not trying to defend geek squad per say, but your story doesn't add up..just sounds like more Best Buy bashing.

Now, this is not to say someone who works there is infallible to a mistake. Every business as good employees and bad employees. But to bash a whole company based on this story, is like claiming they shoved water and mold into your stereo even though it was covered under warranty...it just does not add up.

And I notice some people say they are rude..I wonder if any customers are ever rude to them..and try to scam them..you think?  Nine out of ten times what "being rude" means is being told something you don't want to hear, but it is simply the truth.
