I wish I knew of this website last year when my boyfriend and I purchased an XBOX from Fry's. We bought the $400 dollar model and when we took it to the returns counter the clerk made sure to check the serial number of the XBOX that shows through the box, but they didn't check to see if the second serial number on the hard drive matched (I didn't even know about the two numbers then).

We got the game home and tried to play it, but the games wouldn't work. We also saw that the sticker on the box had been pulled off like it had been previosly sold. We decided that we would return it the next day because we didn't want to drive back to Roseville from Newcastle.

The line at the returns department was already filling up with pissed off people. The kid who looked at our XBOX said we couldn't return it or get a refund because the two serial numbers didn't match and we had already left the store with the merchandise.

We asked to talk to a manager (who was standing behind the kid helping us the whole time not offering any help when we became upset). The manager just kept repeating over and over that there are no refunds and handed us a copy of their refund policy.

At this point the employees and the manager are looking at us like we swithced out the new hard drive on the XBOX with a broken one and tried to return it (like we're theives!). It was humiliating. The branch manager, David Keith, was contacted by us and never returned a call or email until I reported them to the BBB. Then David said he'd be happy to talk to us!

Oh Yeah, the manager we originally talked to gave us the store number which is constantly busy. Fry's employees stonewalled us and showed no concern for people spending a lot of money with them. I had to call Microsoft and send the XBOX to them and they sent us a brand new XBOX that worked, Thank God! I don't ever want to shop at Fry's again.

I don't want to say I was glad to see other people have had the same problems with Fry's, however I hope more people read these reports and stop shopping there. FYI, if you by anything packaged from Fry's open the box and check all serial numbers IN THE STORE, who cares if they don't want you to. It might just save you a lot of money and frustration.

I think that an employee probably switched out the hard drive of their broken XBOX with one of the brand new hard drives that we ended up buying for $400.

Question

AUTHOR: Ashley - Springfield (U.S.A.)

Why should they believe you that you didn't tamper with the hard drive? You are asking them to believe you with no proof. You are accusing one of their employees of swapping out a broken hard drive for your good one.

Put yourself in their shoes. A customer buys an XBox, takes it home, takes out the good hard drive to fix their broken one, puts the broken one back in the new one and returns it to the store. That store has NO way of knowing that you did not do it.

So yes, you are correct, ALWAYS check the serial numbers before you leave the store.

The fact that microsoft fixed it, that was the proper route to take.

No one was ripped off here.
