I am retired and was visiting Clarksville, Indiana, to watch my grandson play in the Indiana Senior League baseball all-star championship tournament.

My son called and made the Candlewood Suites reservation. He had stayed at a candlewood suites in the past and believed they were "Pet Friendly". When he called he told the registration person that I would have my dog with me and was told no problem "We are pet friendly".

On arrival at Candlewood Suites, I registered and was told of my room charges and used my charge card to pay. After the room charges were placed on my card, I retrieved my bags and entered the motel with the luggage and my dog. At that point I was stopped and told that they had not completed the registration for my pet. I continued to the room and my wife went to the desk to complete the "Pet registration". The clerk presented my wife with a form setting forth pet rules which include a per visit NONREFUNDABLE $100.00 pet fee.

Not being told or warned about the pet fee my wife objected and told the clerk we were prepared to go elsewhere. However she was told the room billing would remain even if we vacated. She was also told the pet fee was non refundable even though no damage could be detected in the room we occupied. Also the room would be inspected prior to our leaving and should any damage be detected we were liable.

I was upset over the charge and had we been local it would have been my pleasure to sue the suites for the misrepresentations made at phone reservation and also at registration. At no time were we told of the "Pet Friendly Fee" prior to completing our registration and paying the room fee.

On departure from the suites the room was inspected and cleared. However, on arrival at the ball park it was discovered I failed to obtain, for the boys playing baseball, my cooler with bottled water from the hotel room refrigerator. On returning to the suites to retrieve the cooler I was told the room has been cleaned and there was no cooler turned in by housekeeping.

So the "PET FRIENDLY SUITES" not only got me for an extra hundred but their staff got my cooler and bottled water.

Copies of this complaint will be circulated to pet owner magazines to warn pet owners traveling in and about the united states of the $100, per visit, pet fee charged by this "PET FRIENDLY" corporation. Needles to say, I, my family and many friends will avoid Candlewood Suites. Also as many pet owners as I am able to contact will be made aware of the Candlewood suites rip-off.

Not standard practice at ALL Candlewood Suites

AUTHOR: Rebecca09suzanne - Conway (U.S.A.)

I don't work for this particular property but have worked at a Candlewood Suites for the past 3 years so I'm more than aware of the pet fee issue. Regarding this, the hotel in question was in the wrong for 2 different things. 1. We are only allowed to charge up to a $75 pet fee and if the guests stays 6 or more nights we double it. 2. If you didn't even take your pet up to the room you shouldn't be obligated to pay the fee, however, if you arrived at the hotel after check-in (6pm usually) you will be charged room and tax for that night. I completely understand being upset over the experience but it's not right to condemn all branches just because of a bad experience at one. Yes they should have offered the information that they charge a pet fee but it's customary for most hotels to charge one (although not $100) - I know other properties, including mine, charge a fee based on the weight of the pet. Part of being a good consumer is asking questions when answers are not provided, thus it's a good idea to ask about pet fees when booking a room because it's likely the front desk person was distracted, had just finished training or just not doing their job the way they were supposed to.
