On Aug. 6, 2009, I made a 2-night reservation at Home-Towne Suites hotel in Bowling Green, KY. I was at the hotel the nights of August 7 and 8, 2009, checking out on the morning of Aug. 9, 2009. When I booked the prepaid reservation, my credit card was charged $131.78. However, when I checked out of the hotel, my receipt indicated that the sum of $95.18 had been charged. Upon returning home, I e-mailed hotelsbychain.com. I received a reply today, Aug. 10, from "Satvir S. Customer Service Specialist." In the e-mail I received the following explanation:

Thank you for taking the time to send us an e-mail. We understand that the receipt or bill that your received from the Home-towne Studios Bowling Green showed a lower total than what you were charged by us for your reservation. You would like to know when can your expect the refund of the difference.

Our hotel partner disclosed a rate to you that is not available to the public. Just like every other business, we receive reduced rates because we sell in large volume. If you compare our rates, you will find them to be very competitive. We strive to offer customers the best alternatives for saving money while at the same time maintaining profitability.

We apologize if you are disappointed with the difference in rates; however, we are unable to change or refund a part of the rate you booked through our website.

In the future I will make my own reservations and save the $36.60 difference. Consumers, be warned.

If you read in the response they sent you.

"Our hotel partner disclosed a rate to you that is not available to the public"
- I would tend to believe this because the lowest rate I could find was $69 per night, not including taxes. This brought the total to about $155.

My guess is that they disclosed the "wholesale" rate that they charged the company you booked from. This is between the Hotel and the company, and I am sure that they have made a couple calls to the Hotel to clear this up based on your e-mail.

This is no different than if you go to a store, the store always pays less and marks-up the price to the end customer. Here the Hotel sold the room at $95 for 2-nights to the booking company, and they resold it to you for the $131. This is not a Ripoff, just business. You saved a little over $20, the booking company made money, and the hotel made money.

But yes you do need to be careful. Before you book any Hotel, Airline, Car Rental you should look at all options including booking with the company directly.
