paid for a hotel because I was having some family issues on August 24 and handed in my key August 25, the very next day August 26, I see a charge of 125.00 ! I called the motel and talked to a guy at the front desk I asked him what was it for he said probably for a blanket I asked why would they charge me for a blanket and the hotel room he said the blanket that was stolen accusing me of stealing the comforter, which I did NOT TAKE.

When I left it was there so when they noticed it was missing, instead of calling me because they had my number or emailing me because they had my email first I could have come right back and so they could see that I didn't have it or could have asked the people that were leaving at the same time as me and maybe have come with the culprits, or even have a type of surveillance they charged me for a blanket I didn't even steal!!! I have never had to deal with this situation and I shouldn't have to pay for it b/c of this I am 120 dollars in the negative which I needed my money I am struggling college student.

I called the hotel the guy said he would have the owners call me which they never did the desk guy called me!!
I disputed the charges with my bank and it was declined saying that there were items (instead of an item) missing from my room in which no one has substantial proof and now I'm stuck with an overdraft fee on top of the amount they charged so it my one night stay has turned into lifetime of misery b/c I cannot afford to 125.00 on top 34.00 so it will be eventually submitted to the collections agency which will hurt me even more being that I have no credit!

Help

AUTHOR: Tiredkitten - Kansas City (USA)

The Electronic Funds Transfer Act governs the use of debit cards which I assume is what was used in your case.

If you go to the website listed above, there is a form you can download and give to your banking institution if you have not done so already.

They are required to investigate the disputed charge.  They can give you a temporary credit to your account while they investigate plus if they find in your behalf then they will need to refund all overdrafts etc.  Have you considered opting out of the overdraft coverage?   If you opt out then they cannot charge you overdraft fees.

It's your word against the motel owner/employees.  Be adamant and insist that they investigate.  Tell them you know your rights and as such they need to fulfill them.  I would think that unless you have a history of this kind of thing happening that you would receive the benefit of the doubt.

Either way, do insist on your rights.  Fill out the form I mentioned ASAP.  If you google Electronic Funds Transfer Act you can read about the requirements for settling disputes.

I will say your statement that if they had contacted you right away you could have gone back and proved you didn't have the missing item doesn't make sense since if you show up without the item that does not prove that you took it or that you didn't.

Either way, demand your rights and make sure you get a credit for overdraft charges within 10 days.

Theft: It's against the LAW!

AUTHOR: jbrozelgal - canton (United States of America)

Let me start by saying that I worked for many years in retail as well as the hotel/hospitality industry before recently retiring.

I travel frequently and have stayed at the NEW Motel 6 in Youngstown as I have family in the area that I visit a few times each year - I usually stay 3-4 days and have always found the hotel rooms to be impeccably clean, the staff professional and the price/value outstanding.

Theft is against the Ten Commandments.  Theft is also against all federal, state and local laws.  If you get caught stealing clothes from a department store you will get arrested - just look at Winona Ryder...  If you get caught stealing steaks from Wal-Mart, you will get arrested.  If you get caught stealing a car off the street, guess what?  You will get arrested.

When you check into a hotel, you legally agree to be responsible for the contents of the hotel room (According to Ohio Law), as well as agreeing to abide by all laws regarding behavior (i.e. underage drinking).  The hotel owner must keep these laws are posted on the back of the door.  You probobly NEVER read that little card - most people dont.

Many hotels will in fact sell you their in-room items if you only ask.  It's ok to take the little shampoos, sewing kit and soaps - hotels WANT you to have those things.  However, if you feel like you just can't live without the complimentary bathrobe or slippers, blanket or pillows, and don't ask to purchase them, then it's theft, and you will be charged.

The solution to the problem is simple.  DON'T STEAL!  Anything.  Ever.

Get a credit card

AUTHOR: bruce2954 - (USA)

Get a credit card as soon as possible. That way you can look over your bill before you decide to pay all of the charges. If you dispute a charge on your credit card, they would do an investigation before you had to pay. Getting your money back is more difficult because the bank has no interest in who gets the money, but when you use a credit card you're using their money and they'll take a greater interest.
