We had cockroaches in our older 1950's house and with young children I decided to call Orkin to get a quote. My husband said go ahead since we need to get rid of them, so I hired them.

Everything was going great and then winter came and we started to get mice. The man said he would put some rat bait and traps out and that should take care of the mice. He put the bait outside of the house where we had two cats and a chocolate lab. My dog got to the bait. He had a blue tongue from the dye in the bait, he was walking funny, eyes couldn't focus and vomiting terribly. We had to give him to the humane society because we couldn't pay for a vet hospital. He was put to sleep the next day. He grew up with my three year old and I had to explain to that child why "Choco" wasn't here anymore.

Now they expect us to pay the rest of the bill of $78.56.

Did you act responsibly?

AUTHOR: Paul Pickle - Raleigh (U.S.A.)

You fail to mention if you clearly told the exterminator that you had family pets living outside. It sounds as if you didn't even think to mention it at the time, and are upset now after discovering the grim results. How is Orkin to blame when they only did what you asked them to do? (aka, attempt to rid your pest-infested home by placing the necessary bait/traps in the appropriate areas) Exterminators are not mind-readers. Unless you specifically tell them that you have domesticated animals on the premises, they have no way of knowing that they need to take care so as not to harm your pets.

No pest controller would ever put rodenticides outside a residence with young children

AUTHOR: Marcus - Zion (U.S.A.)

Professional Pest Controller Responds..

No pest controller would ever put rodenticides outside a residence with young children UNLESS THE RODENTICIDE WAS IN A CHILD AND PET RESISTANT CONTAINER! To drop "rat bait" on the ground is certainly illegal. These boxes are exceptionally common, and EVERY licensed pest controller in the USA knows of them. It is a good thing that it was only a dog that ate the bait. I suggest that you call the Iowa Public Health Department (or equiv.) and find out who licenses residential pest control techs in Iowa, then press charges.
