I went to Happiness is Pets in Oak Lawn two and a half weeks ago. My husband and I fell in love with an 8 week old Lab puppy. Two days later, on Monday, I took the puppy to one of the vets on the approved "FREE" vet check up list. They said the puppy seemed healthy; had no signs of worms; gave me a free Heartguard and Frontline; and some antibiotics when I told them that the dog seemed to have a cough. They told me that Kennel cough was common in dogs from pet stores, kennels or boarding hotels.

I gave the dog the meds and five days later, he was worse. I took him to my own vet exactly one week after the first vet check up and the kennel cough had gotten worse. The vet, whom it have used for years for my cats and two previous dogs I had, told me that the pup looks and appears to be generally healthy.

We were given a pedigree for our dog, who suposedly had some champions in his line, so I went online to google the breader listed on my paper work so I could try and contact them with a few general questions. I was shocked to be brought to this site. After reading the horror stories regarding this pet store, and the common breeder, Steve Kraus, I am very upset and concerned for what the future holds for my wonderful pup and my pocket book. This is the first dog my husband has EVER had in his life and the first one we got as a family; I am just devestated to think that our baby Titan may end up being a constantly ill family member. So far he is extremely active and has a very hearty apitite.

As of now, I plan to boycott this store and spread the word of the bad business they do and the poor dogs they sell. If I have to, I will print out the stories and paste them all over the windows of the store, on street light poles and everywhere else I can think of to keep people from going to their store.

I wish everyone who was taken by this breeder and this store the very best.

Kennel Cough

AUTHOR: gubeedal - (United States of America)

Kennel Cough is very common amongst pets from any place such as pet stores and shelters. Pets can seem to be very ill from it as well. I adopted a dog from animal welfare that had such severe kennel cough, I could feel her fever, and she wasn't eating. Thankfully, I had gotten pills for her, and while she did get worse before she got better, she did get better eventually. Unfortunately, the dog I got from animal welfare must have been beaten repeatedly by her previous owner. She cowers and sometimes pees herself when you are mad at her. My brother was playing with her and blew his breath at her and she rolled over on her back, cowered, and peed herself. Don't get me wrong, my dog is sweet and the most loving dog ever. She is very intelligent. But you feel so guilty when she has to be disclipined its heartbreaking. She still has problems with going in the house. (I beleive she was kept in a laundry room and made to go there, because it is the only place she ever goes in the house) and you don't have to say anything to her, but when you clean it up, she cowers. I did some research with happiness is pets and they actually have a better vet guarantee than animal welfare. The problem with the pets at these places is their pedigree. Most pedigree animals have many health problems because of the constant inbreeding to keep the breed "pure". Therefore, don't blame the store.
