Petsmart i was fired for preventing my coworker from being attacked! staten island, New York

I was a groomer at Petsmart for two years. I worked with lazy people who didn't like working and was sexually harassed. I was talked out of quitting on two separate occasions because "I was the best worker in the store".  An irate customer was screaming and verbally abusing two of my coworkers and myself because she didn't want to pay the $150 bill for her three dogs. We suspected she was under the influence of something. We had called a manager in and he was frightened of the woman so he stood behind us and said nothing. She stood there for TWENTY MINUTES screaming and cursing at us. The manager did NOTHING. While my coworkers might not have handled the situation the best way, I remained calm, polite and professional trying to deal with the customer. At one point she tried climbing over the three foot tall gate in the salon to hit one of my coworkers.  I closed the gate on her to prevent her from physically attacking my coworker. I was fired the next day because apparently the gate touched her leg when I shut it. I was told I should have done nothing and let her attack because the customer is always right. What a great company to work for!
