Petsmart no refunds on gift cards, condescending representatives Phoenix Arizona

This seems rather petty compared to the reports of pet illness and death I've read on this site, but all the same...
I recently purchased a $40 gift card for a relative, who is an equine enthusiast (horse person.) After hearing her speak about how petsmart no longer offers equine items, I attempted to return the gift card, with receipt and the original credit card used for purchase to the physical location where I originally purchased it. I was denied, and given a number for the corporate offices in Arizona. I called the office this morning to kindly request a refund, and left a message on the customer assistance line stating the earlier issue: no point in giving a gift card to a shop that doesn't supply equine items and doesn't have any hosehold pets! I politely requested a refund, and gave my contact information.
I received a call back earlier this afternoon from a smug woman who stated that there were no refunds on cards, which are, apparently, treated as cash. She stated that equine products have not been offered for two years now, which is very surprising, since I could have swore I was in a store earlier this year that had equine items! Perhaps it was a competitor, but they clearly use the same type of building design. Warehouse type place with almost identical signs over the isles showing what animal pertains to what area of the store.
In any case, like I said earlier, they didn't kill my dog, (I don't even have a dog,) but after the poor service I've received, I will be certain to not purchase anything from their stores again.

NO Store will allow you to return a Gift Card. There are some states that require a store to refund the remaining balance if it is under a small amount(such as $5 or $10), but that is the closest you are going to get if you happen to live in one of these states. If you had any pets you could have used the card yourself, or if you know someone who has a pet see if they would take it off your hands.
Not quite sure why you would have "been in the store" earlier in the year if you have no pets. Also, not sure what a threat of not purchasing anything from their store in the future would do since you don't have any pets anyways. But either way you should have verified that they had what your relative could have used, BEFORE you got the card.

It has been 1.5 years since Petsmart has carried equine products. I am in Petsmart at least once a week, I have to with 5 dogs and 7 cats.
Petsmart sold their equine division in the first half of 2007 and phased out those products in-store well before the end of 2007. So you may have wandered into another petstore mistakenly thinking it was petsmart. Being that you are not a pet owner, you would not notice that there is quite a big difference between chains as you mentioned in your OP, "Perhaps it was a competitor, but they clearly use the same type of building design. Warehouse type place with almost identical signs over the isles showing what animal pertains to what area of the store."
Here is the link to the Petsmart press release announcing the sale of their equine division. Notice the wire date.

As Robert mentioned in the previous post, "NO Store will allow you to return a Gift Card." This is absolutely correct. Ask around in other stores what the return policy is on gift cards and find out for yourself, if you believe we are incorrect.
