I recently filled a prescription at Walgreens for pain. This is a refill of a prescription I have had for a couple of weeks. I had been filling it at Sams Club(you don't have to be a member to use their pharmacy) but they were closed and I was in alot of pain. Walgreens charged almost a dollar fifty more per pill to fill my prescription. That is a difference of twenty five dollars. How can they do this and how can they get away with it?

People do not fill your prescriptions at Walgreens. Or do if you want to pay a 150% mark up from the store down the street. A strong message should be sent to these people that we don't have to pay these rip-off prices, because you really don't. From now on I vow to never shop another walgreens again. You should too. Or do you like getting shafted?

Typical Comment

AUTHOR: Cory - San Antonio (U.S.A.)

This is a typical comment from a "person" who doesn't have a fuc*ing clue about the way the real world works. Walgreens are found on almost every corner. Many are located on very expensive pieces of real estate. Many, if not all stay open 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Probably 365 days a year. Jess said of sam's, "they were closed". I make my point. There are a couple of Sam's in most major cities, that stay open set hours. Cheap jess is even too cheap to become a Sam's member. "You don't have to be a member to use their pharmacy". If cheap jess had paid attention to the level of his meds, he wouldn't have had to go to walgreens. That's his fault. You can buy a gallon of milk at walmart for $2.99. If you go to a 7/11 type convience store, they charge $5. That's why they're called convience stores. As for meds, when you have a co-pay of $15 or $20 it doesn't matter what the total price is. You'll still only pay the co-pay. Had to fill one of my wife's scripts. Did I feel like driving the 20 miles to sam's to get the script filled? NO. Stopped off at a walgreens a half mile away and they filled it. Noticed they had a bunch of other things in there besides. It's a large convience store with a pharmacy inside. When you got to the counter to pay and they gave you the price, you could have just said no and waited in pain, until sam's opened up. That was your choice. I might add that the crooks are starting to hit walgreens because they are open 24/7, putting the employees at risk. So instead of bitching, you might just say; Thank You. I do.

Was this a small volume of pills?

AUTHOR: Lorraine - Geek Consumer Advocate :-) - Phoenix (U.S.A.)

Hi Jess. I'm a pain patient. One thing I know well, having no insurance, is the cost of pain meds. No matter where you buy opiate based pain meds, it's the same .. the more pills you get, the lower the cost.

I'm guessing here, but did your doctor give you only 30 pills at a time? The small volume amount of pills and the store you bought from, is why they were so high in cost. I get 180 Lortab 10's a month and I don't have any discount pharmacies near where I live. I'm buying from SafeWay, one of the higher priced pharmacies around and I'm still only paying 91 dollars each time I get a refill every month.

Before my tolerance rose last year I was only getting 120 of them a month and it was costing 84 dollars. You can see from that small increase in price, compared to the pill count, that the cost isn't the meds as much as it's the overhead the store has. You are paying for the name brand store and it's operating costs to remain open.

The Sam's Club you originally filled your script at has a lower cost to operate, which is then passed on to it's customers in the cost of their prescriptions.

Hope this helps you understand why you had to pay more at Walgreens as opposed to Sam's Club.

Do you put other people down so you can feel better about yourself

AUTHOR: Jess - tampa (U.S.A.)

you're an idiot. Do you put other people down so you can feel better about yourself. Is your life that bad. Your level of education is appearant in the way you write and spell. Maybe you should keep your opinions to yourself (I'm sure you've heard that plenty of times before.) If your not smart enough to shop a cheaper store in a capitalistic society then you are the exact type person that is counted on the pay that five dollars for a gallon of milk. lol. You are a lazy bastard and I feel sorry for your children. If you have children do them a favor and leave, If you don't do the world a favor and kill yourself before you procreate. If you can't maybe you should take the hint. Further more, not that I have to justify being cheap, but I bet my four bedroom house in my deed restricted neighborhood justify's any need to be cheap while your studio apartment and no vehicle justify the need for you to shop at the local convienent mart. Go drown yourself in the can of natural ice you are drinking.

Did Sam's club give you generic

AUTHOR: Sean - Portland (U.S.A.)

If you could, find out exactly what Walgreen's was going to give you, and then check with Sam's club pharmacy. My only guess is that Sam's club gave you a generic prescription instead of the name brand your doctor prescribed. Usually the pharmacy tech will ask you if you prefer generic to save money. This is all I can think of as to why Walgreens charged you so much more. We all know name brand med's are a terror to the pocket book.

Hope all goes well.

Walgreens has higher overhead

AUTHOR: Alyson - Hillsboro (U.S.A.)

It costs Walgreens more to be open all the time, thus we cost more than Sam's Club. Also, Sam's club and other membership-only places get part of their revenue from memberships. Walgreens does not, thus they have to make their money through the cost of their products. I don't know what quantity you were purchasing, but there's also a base charge of $9.99 to pay for the time and expertise of the pharmacist and technicians, much like a service fee at a mechanic's. The base cost of your medications might have been low, but you have to pay for the convenience of us being there all hours of the night and our other amenities, like the drive-thru and computer system that enables features like Express Pay, Autofill, and linking to every other Walgreens in the country. I'm betting that the base fee is at the root of your complaint. I also hope that, if this was a controlled medication, that your pharmacist at Sam's Club or Walgreens advised you that if there were further refill on the script, that it cannot be transferred back. You will need a new script to continue filling it at Sam's Club.

OKAY NOW LETS SET SOME THINGS STRAIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AUTHOR: Amy H - Orlando (U.S.A.)

First off--
I sincerely hope that even though your medication was a little more expensive at Walgreens, it will not deter you from using our services at 2 AM on Sunday morning when your little kid is sick and you just left the ER and Sams doesn't open till...whenever they open. Another little piece of info....Walgreens and CVS are very similar in cash prices of drugs. District makes sure that they are almost the same, so CVS will not be any better.

I'm not sure if this was going on at the time of the occurrence or if this medication was included in their little $4 prescriptions, but we do not match prices, especially not $4 generics..OR the free antibiotic program Publix is offering right now!

Our lowest price for cash payments at the moment is $11.99 and it goes up from there. INDIVIDUAL stores do not set the prices, they are set by someone a lot higher than us!

There are many discount cards you could use, all you do is go online which you are obviously able to do, and search free drug savings card and you will come up with tons! Sometimes, especially on things like generic painkillers that are still kind of expensive they can save up to 50% of the cost...Also, AAA offers a discount, as long as you have your card with you.

I do agree with Cory, it is defintiely something you should keep an eye on and not wait until the last minute to fill a prescription, especially if this is such an important medication for you to have...Also I am guessing this was not a refill but a new prescription, because if it was a refill Sams would have had to be open for us to transfer the prescription in the first place!

Do not confuse high prices to keep a business running with terrible service...We were there when we needed you...And we'll be there next time too.
