My wife and I planned to move to San Diego so I could be close to the VA Hospital in La Jolla. We found a rental on Craig's List and sent Jennifer Prevost aka Jennifer Gonzales a deposit of $1,800.00. Jennifer told us the place was clean with a view of Mission Bay.
When we arrived we found a stairway going up to the apartment. The stairs were falling apart and the hand railing was rusted and broken off from the stairs.
We could not see the bay. Our view was the garbage from a resort next door.
Inside the house was filthy dirty. The kitchen floor was cracked and covered with dirt buildup. The kitchen cabinets and drawers were dirty inside and out.
The entrance door had a large gap at the bottom, large enough for rodents and insects to come in.
The window sills were covered with dirt and decomposing insects. The windows were filthy.
The shower head in the bathroom was taped on with cellophane tape.
Jennifer had promised to meet us there, but she was no where to be found.
My wife called Jennifer on the phone. Jennifer said the place was clean when she checked it this morning. She said she could not make it by that night.
The place was too dirty to stay for even one night. We had to stay with friends that night.
I called Jennifer and asked about the deposit. She said we would not get our deposit back and she wanted the rent for the month also. She told me again that the place was clean. When I told her that I took pictures of the place she changed and said that she could have a cleaning crew come by next week.
I explained to Jennifer that the place was not only dirty, but had safety hazards such as the stairs and broken railing. Jennifer told me to tell it to Judge Judy or any judge, but I would not get my deposit back.
Now we are out $1,800.00 and I am 500 miles away from the medical care that we moved to San Diego for.
