" The letter I received from them says their decision was based on info provided by Equifax. "
OK, so they apparently didn't like what they saw on the Equifax report. When a potential creditor denies credit on the basis of a credit report, the credit reporting agency is required to provide you a free report on request. This is so you can see what they saw and check for any possible errors.
" I tried to find out from them (Equifax)...no luck. I can't seem to find out what the problem was. "
Did you actually order your free credit report and review it? This is really the only way to start. It's possible that there could be an error on the report that is affecting your creditworthiness.
" My credit is not bad, I have no accounts past due, I have NO litigation, even pay more than my minimum payments. I don't understand why I was denied a very small loan to buy a $299.00 couch from Big Lots Store, in Northport, Al. "
It could be anything. It's really up to the lender's discretion whether or not you qualify. There are more things than past due acccounts and litigation that can affect the process. Since you imply that you have other outstanding obligations, perhaps they considered your debt to income ratio was too high. Bottom line is that if you don't see anything wrong with your credit report, you may never find out the exact reason for denial on this particular loan. The lender is not obligated to tell you exactly why you were denied.
" I was very shocked at this refusal, and it has damamged my feelings of self-worth "
If your feelings of self worth are so closely tied to a $300 credit denial, you should probably seek counseling.
