I recently went to a new smog testing station instead of the one I usually go to. Bad idea. My truck has passed every test for 5 years until it came to A1 smog. The reason wasn't that it had poor emissions or something environmentally bad; They said the air pump hose was supposed to be in the center of the catalytic converter and not on the side. What?????. They wanted $150.00 or they would not pass my truck (which is fuel injected I might add). I left with a $35.00 dent in my wallet and headed for another certified smog service center, ten minuets later it had passed with flying colors. My only satisfaction is that the company I work for used to send their freight of work trucks to A1 smog..... Guess what happened.

We are sorry that you feel we were picking on you, but we were not. The State of California sets the standards that we must go by. If we do not do the inspection properly we can and will receive fines along with possible license suspensions. The configuration of the catalytic system is engineered to work a certain way. If that design is changed it will not work as it was designed to work. The catalytic converter was not installed properly, or it was modified on the installation to fit your vehicle. If it had been caught by the other shops it could have & should have been sent back to the installing shop to be fixed or replaced with the correct converter. Just because another shops did not catch it does not mean we were wrong to fail you for it, it just means that sooner or later it will cost you or whoever you sell it to more money. The other shops will eventually get an UNDERCOVER Bureau of Automotive Repair car in there shop and they will be penalized for not doing proper inspections(yes they do send cars in at random to see you are complying with the laws). We are gold shield certified shops and do not wish to lose that rating.
This type of problem is why the state revised the catalytic converter laws in 2009, (because converters were being installed incorrectly or modified so the shop could sell you what they had on hand) it is because of these types of actions that it is now cost all of us more money. We do our best to try to balance between what the State requires and what is best for the customer. We are sorry we have lost your business as well as your companies business. Please try and think of it this way, if we did incorrect emissions tests, it would be like you not paying your taxes. The State WILL get its taxes( and federal taxes) and you would pay the penalties!!! Emissions fines are much steeper. We do not want to try for those penalties, DO YOU????

We do our best to try to balance between what the State requires and what is best for the customer. We are sorry we have lost your business as well as your companies business. Please try and think of it this way, if we did incorrect emissions tests, it would be like you not paying your taxes.
