If you use ATT for cable or Direct TV service in apartments beware...ATT will try and scam you out of extra money by trying to collect bogus equipment charges from you after you cancel service.

I just received a collection letter from a collection agency (Credit Management, LP) working for AT&T Home Entertainment demanding $275.00 for unreturned equipment. Just one problem, I cancelled my cable service on November 23, returned the equipment in boxes supplied by ATT via UPS, and received signed delivery confirmation the next day, November 24, that ATT received the equipment in their Carrollton, TX warehouse.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but I was a ATT HE customer for over 3 years, had never had a late payment, and returned the equipment exactly as requested by ATT customer service.  I expected better.

The crazy thing is I haven't even received my last bill!  The collection agency told me they received the account from ATT on December 3, only 9 days after I cancelled service.  I had no contract with ATT so there is no way they can claim I broker an agreement.  I even sent back the cable adapters which wasn't even requested.

Guess they think since I'm the nice guy that pays his bills that I'll just take it.  Not a chance as I've already contacted the FTC, filed a complaint here and on every other complaint board I could find, and have sent certified letters to the ATT offices, the FTC offices, and the credit collection agency.  If they even try to report this on my credit report I will contact an attorney (yes, I just happen to have one in the family that handles class action lawsuits) and sue them all.  Oh yeah, and I had already signed up for and received installation of ATT Uverse services in my new home.  It's great and all, but I will be cancelling this service and going with Direct TV or Dish. They may not be much better, but I'm not about to sit here and send one more penny to ATT.

The moral of the story here kids is that the big bad ATT always thinks it can screw the little guy because most people just sit around and take it.  Don't do it, fight back, and make their lives hell until you get action.
