My wife and I took her 99' dodge durango to Aamco transmissions on University Parkway in Winston Salem , nc.While we were waiting there was a gentleman there who was a saleman by trade.He told us he had his vehicle in three times in one month,and didnt recommend us to bring it here.He also told us that if you have problems dont let them know they can provide a rental vehicle until the vehicle is fixed, even if they say they wont!We wanted a nationwide coverage being that I work in the Aerospace Industry and occassionally drive out of state for long periods.M

y wife also uses the vehicle to drive her handicapped clients and averages min. fifty miles per day.Upon receiving the durango back after it was overhauled, she noticed the shifter was between the Neutral and Drive letters and was hard to get into gear, but after waiting over a whole business week without the vehicle she was desperate for transportation and vowed to return soon to get it fixed.

After driving the vehicle that day, she told me that the transmission would slip and jerk occasionally, when accelerating in the lower gears. I told her to call them and tell them of your findings.She did,but we couldnt get in until a few days.When the builder TOMMY test drove the vehicle he said the jerking were some bad sensors-they replaced,but jerking remained.Then a rattle started.

Again, they looked and said now we have a cracked flexplate(flywheel) and it would cost $450.00 plus parts and
labor, because the warranty doesnt cover it.I being suspicious told my wife to take the vehicle to the Silas Creek Parkway Aamco and have it diagnosed.They would not tell us their findings, but told us to take it back to the University Parkway Aamco who did the work, they would not warranty their work.We had planned a fiftieth wedding anniversary for my parents in Ohio, and had much money invested.We drove the vehicle there and had it checked by another Aamco shop in Dayton, Ohio.They told us it had an active fault code and that the transmission was not properly service with fluid and added 2 quarts.I told them I had checked the transmission before we left NC in Neutral and Idling at operating temperature, and it was on the high mark.

The technician drove the vehicle and the jerking stopped but the rattle remained.He told me that he believed the transmission was burning trans. fluid, that after just a few weeks past overhaul it should not have used that much fluid.We took the transmission back to Aamco U.P. and asked for help.They informed us that 1) That location was under new ownership and management 2) Because we drove the transmission , after they wanted $700.00 plus more dollars to fix the problem, that the warranty was void!
3) At this point the warranty was just over the mileage.
I want to stress at this point that they were extremely short and evil spirited with us at this point!

We then took the vehicle to --- transmissions in King , NC after being recommended by four friends.Unknown to us at the time, Vern stated that he used to work at Aamco transmissions years ago and knows of their corrupt activity, and the speed at which they throw their work together with.He with 25+ years experience as a transmission builder / owner personally disassembled the trans and made a startling discovery.The locating pin on the upper passenger side of the Bellhousing, which is machine fit, was driven back beyond flush with the forward Bellhousing flange, allowing counter-rotational torque from the engine to cant the trans enough to eat into the flywheel cracking it, torque converter shaft shows eliptical wear,knauling the transmission pump seals, allowing a host of other conditions to occur.I have taken detailed photos, and can describe the conditions having been a Heavy Maintenance MRO Licensed Aerospace Quality Control Professional for 26+ years.

It is unquestionably obvious the shoddy maintenance performed, was due to inexperience of the assembler / builder, and or hasty time spent on the job.I will assemble a full detailed inspection with photos and statements from three builder witnesses.

My comments were concerning the problems under warranty. I don't know if they received a 12,000 miles, 36,000 mile or lifetime warranty. And for this problem it does not matter except as it sounded here that the warranty had expired. I stand behind what I said which was "it is rare that a rebuilt transmission will go beyong 12,000 miles if it was built wrong".

I not trying to defend any center. Any active AAMCO warranty will be worked on at this center weather it was from the previous owners or other AAMCO center.

I'll assume the guy meant 120K miles, not 12K.

I used to rebuild trannies(5 years), and never had a comeback. I was not the CHEAPest guy doing them, but quality costs. My rebuilds included everything except the case, the shafts, and drums(unless they were torn up also). In other words, my rebuilds were equal to brand new.

My 1998 Concorde LXi has 225K miles on the original transaxle. I flush it every 50K miles, and change the filter every 100K. I use the correct fluid(ATF+4) and Tow Kool additive from NAPA. The flow numbers for the clutch packs look like a new one.

If a rebuilder cannot duplicate the factory original in quality, he should stop doing them.

With statements like that, it's YOU who shouldn't be in business. Hyundai and Kia warrant their trannies for 100,000 miles if you're the original owner. Chrysler now has a lifetime warranty. I've routinely put 100,000 plus miles on properly maintained transmissions.
If you expect people to believe a transmision's life is 12,000 miles I feel bad for you, and worse for your customers.

Some people should not be in business. While some of the complaints by James does not make sence to me. I will not try to defend the old mangement. I will tell you that I have been in the transmission business for over seven years. I have a great track record and I have several letters of Thank You from customers that I have done business with.

I will be happy to show them to you and if fact I have them in a folder that you can read anytime. The one thing that all AAMCO customers should know is that if they have a transmission problem that is under warranty they can request and/or demand that it be repair at a different site as long as you are more than fifty miles from the shop that made the first repairs.

There are a lot of shops out there that would like to be part of the AAMCO franchise but they don't have what it takes. As a buyer of services myself, anytime I hear a competitor running down the competition it makes me very suspicious of their motivation. Normally it means they see your pain and they are trying to take advantage of it.

Very few transmissions can continue operating for a long time (i.e. 12,000 miles) without it putting you on the side of the road. Anyone with a small amount of experience can give a layman a story about how this or that may have caused the problem. However I not trying to justify what the previous management may or may not have done incorrectly. I want all current and future AAMCO customers to know that if I can help feel free to call me. 336-767-8301.
