I was employed for Abelard for a few months in 2012 and I wanted to warn the people of Indiana about this company's M.O. I was the Q/C and customer service guy that put a 1000 miles on my new truck a week to drive around inspect the jobs after they were done and get a q/c paper signed that released the company of future liability etc. It started off fine but after a week I began to question the integrity of the office. The owner hired a person with almost no construction experience to run his production in 4 states. They operate by mailing all the job files to the location in Indiana and dump them all on the P.M.'s lap. This creates all sorts of problems but I will stick to the facts of my experience since the owner will spend money on lawyers but not on his employees to keep them. Becuase the office staff is so overworked they "roll" all the phones to an answering service. Even when they have 4 people in the office the phones are still rolled as they cant keep up with the complaints and jobs coming in which creates BBB and Angies list issues and many angry homeowners. I was promised a commission on all the Q/C forms I got signed that gave the company an A or B rating so i worked hard at handling the issues of homeowners. I found out shortly before i quit that I was not getting any commission. Out of the 30 or so homeowners I talked to only 5 or 6 were actually happy. They were owed work or promised work by the sales rep that originally sold the job. The problem was almost none of the salesmen from earlier in the year were still on staff. (confirm this on angies list and BBB) I also tried to collect several jobs done in April in SEPTEMBER. Even though the job had been done for over 3 months. Besides this the office has not 1 MESC poster. They have no OSHA safety programs and no one, while i worked there, was even OSHA certified. Except me. This is illegal. Absolutely illegal. I was paid completely as a sub (on salary even.. also illegal) with no taxes taken out even though my check was for a 40 hour week. Also against Government and IRS regulations. Abelard is also what is called a storm chasing company. They find a hail storm that has created enough damage and open an office there. That's how they have sets all over the country. They might be there now but they all started as storms. If the market was good they simply stayed. They own 2 very nice offices in Carmel but don't have 1 spot that stores materials or tools. Indeed Abelard has NO tools. They hire subs off Craigslist to do all the work. They have no in house subs at all. They commit fraud by asking the insurance companys to pay for items on a claim yet don't pay the subs the money. That money is used to increase the profits. The roofers are expected to re flash the chimneys and hold the warranty if it leaks but Abelard DOES NOT PAY FOR CHIMNEY FLASHING TO SUBS. Indeed all the warrantys are held by the subs that did the work. Not the company.
