Afni, INC Scam trying to charge for bills that don't exist!! Bloomington, Illinois

In 2007 I had a Verizon bill that my ex ran up to a little over $700 before he skipped town. As they do, they shut the phone off the following month since the bill was not paid. Apparently my bill was then sent over to Afni, Inc. After looking at my credit report, there are two billings on there for Verizon with similar amounts. I called Afni, Inc and asked for verification of debt. The service agent said it would be out in a few days, but then was only concerned with when I would be able to pay the debts off. I asked him if it showed what addresses it showed for the service address. He told me it was the same address and name for both bills and then asked again when I would pay them. I informed him that I didn't know of ANY phone company that gave a person a new phone line when they had one outstanding and that is when he told me it was the same phone number on both!

I'm not an idiot. Phone companies cut you off right away if not paid. They don't let it go for months and they wouldn't have turned the phone with the same number on with a balance of over $700! I pointed this out to him and he told me that one of the bills was for basic services and the other one was for long distance services! SO, that tells me that he is telling me I had a phone bill of over $1500!! No way! When I pointed this out to him, he stuttered for a moment and then said yes. 

I have no problem paying a debt I owe, but which one is the valid one?! He also asked me one more time when I would be paying them off in full. That is when I told him, when they were validated and asked why he was asking for payment in full since I had just gotten settlement offers on both for $100 each. He told me it was because I contacted them - which I would have had to do to pay them anyway!!!
