Alltel is unwilling to help put a stop to identity theft. It seems as if it is a common practice for criminals to use your stolen credit and bank card information to replenish prepaid Alltel accounts. This happened to my husband after he used his card at an Outback resturant in our area. He phoned the Alltel customer service number and the rep confirmed that the card was used with their company, but he would need totake that up with his bank. While reporting the inncident to the bank the teller told him that this was an ongoing problem with Alltel. She said she has personally spoken with Alltel representatives, and they feel as if it is not their problem. How is the bank or the consumer going to stop this action if Alltel will not cooperate and disclose the information on the crooks that are doing this. I am currently an Alltel customer and it is really disheartening to know that I am affiliated with a company that sides with the thieves.

You Still Don't Get It

AUTHOR: Bikebryan - (U.S.A.)

Alltel will provide all information they are obligated, by law, to provide in this situation...through proper channels. They are NOT obligated to provide it directly to you, but through proper legal channels.

You are misunderstood

AUTHOR: Jf :( - (U.S.A.)

You are not understanding that Alltel has a responsibility under the Fair Credit Reporting Act to provide individuals whose information has been used knowingly or unknowingly to process a transaction with the details of that transaction. Don't worry Bikebryan. I know my rights and I will be getting that information soon. As I stated before, I know Alltel did not commit the crime, however they do have a responsibilty to help their clients.

You still misunderstand the process...SIGH

AUTHOR: Bikebryan - (U.S.A.)

Alltel is not the aggrieved party here. They are not responsible for the civil repsonisbility in charging the person or persons with identify theft and/or fraud. The person who had their Credit Card information used wrongly is responsible. All Alltel knows is that a person used that informaton to charge minutes to. PERIOD. If they say they are you, and have YOUR credit card info, it's you. Further, it can be done without talking to a person, over the internet or via an automated phone system, and nobody ever talked to them.

Again, there IS a process. It is initiated through the financial institution the card is issued through. It is reported to them and THEY are responsible for investigating it through proper channels, NOT ALLTEL.

I agree ....

AUTHOR: Jf :( - (U.S.A.)

I completely agree with you about not getting any help to fight the crooks. The same thing happened to me yesterday. I understand Alltel does not have a crystal ball and cannot automatically know when someone is performing an act if identity thefy, however, I do believe Alltel does not have an efficient way of helping the actual victim. Alltel will not give me the authorization number for the payment that was processed with MY DEBT CARD yesterday or anything. Now that is just flat out wrong. They said it was a privacy issue. In my opinion, Alltel should revoke my property, the minutes purchased with my money, until it is proven that I did not actually purchase them, but no, I am left at Christmas time stopping payments on my own bills, not being able to but groceries and counting down the minutes until my internet and cell phones are disconnected with Alltel. I already had my payment set up for my actual account with Alltel, but now there are not sufficient funds in my account. I definitely see Alltel snatching my dollar from someone else, but not helping me to find out who it was, so I can turn right back around and give it back to Alltel. Not only are they hurting me, but themselves also! I think any company should have a resposibility to their client to at least turn off the telephone of a person that is suspected of commiting fraud. Or have some type of report to fill out when something like this happens. Some type of official action. If the person was actually stealing from Alltel in their store or otherwise, you had better count on the fact that Alltel would be prosecuting. What does that say about Alltel?

Common Sense...

AUTHOR: Bikebryan - (U.S.A.)

No, I'm not paid to respond. I just know common sense. Alltel has no ability to stop somebody from using a stolen credit card. Further, it is not Alltel's responsibility to deal with identity theft. That is the responsibility of the consumer...PERIOD.

Yeah Bryan why would Alltel give a crap that someone used someone's credit card as long as the bill got paid they don't care that it's not legit. I was just curious how much Alltel pays you to reply to these reports? FYI I have Alltel and personally haven't had a problem but apparently others have so let them vent and keep your 2 cents to yourself.

This is not an Alltel Issue

AUTHOR: Bikebryan - (U.S.A.)

Identity theft of this type is not an Alltel issue. All they know is a card # that was given to them and it is showing up as a VALID card. Consumer Credit Protection laws require the issuing card company to resolve disputes, not the merchants who are also victims.

Once you realized the card was being abused, was the card cancelled IMMEDIATELY? Was the bank/issuing company contacted IMMEDIATELY? Blame the thief, not the company who will also be a victim once the dispute causes them to lose the money they were given using that card.

Again, don't blame the company...blame the THIEF.
