We all like to find a good deal when traveling, especially with the skyrocketing costs of airfares. Alas, sometimes a great deal that seems too good to be true may be just that!
I have not traveled overseas in a long while and was too naive to realize that it was possible to purchase plane tickets from what appeared to be a reputable travel agency that in fact resells award travel to unsuspecting consumers. The challenge in this situation is to recognize that many companies like Alpha Flight Guru do exist. They appear to be reputable, post many testimonials on their sites, employ friendly and efficient staff with whom one would like to do business again. For all intents and purposes they do inspire confidence. Even someone like myself who did not fall off the apple cart yesterday was taken for a ride, having been enticed by a great overseas business class airfare at about half the usual cost!
Everything seemed to go well until there was a problem with our plane taking off due to an electrical outage. We were delayed many many hours. I called my Alpha Guru who said it was the airlines' responsibility to put me on another flight, not hers. While the staff at the airport was very helpful and did get me onto another much later flight, I happened to learn by calling the airlines' 800# that I was unable to get on several other earlier departures due to the fact that I was traveling on a mileage award! I was addressed by a name other than my own and was in shock. That was the first I learned of this. I still did not realize that my travel plans were in jeopardy.
I did arrive safely at my destination and all went well in business class as well as in all lounges and stopover locations. However, I still did not realize that this was all illegal according to the airlines. Ultimately, when I tried to change my return flight and was told this mileage would be returned to "my" mileage account which I declined to have happen, it became problematic...I was told that this was fraudulent activity and my return ticket was canceled! There I was overseas having to come up with a very large amount to cover the return ticket for which I had already paid. Needless to say it cut my trip short and left a very bad feeling.
I tried many times to contact my travel agent, Toma, as well as her superiors, but to no avail. I also see that they have attempted to discredit the negative postings regarding their services that are on Trip Advisor. I also attempted to contact the airlines themselves but it is evidently not worth their time to pursue this, so I imagine these activities will continue.
DO NOT USE ALPHA FLIGHT GURU or other discounted services unless you are 100% certain of their integrity. Or take the risk!
