This report is to inform consumers of bad business with America On Line internet service and Chevy Chase Bank. I started with AOL's 1000 hrs or 45 days of free service. When that came to an end AOL never contacted me on what kind of plan I would like to be placed on. Not only was I paying for the $23.90 per month, but they would outrageously charge me a service fee for $200 and even $300 a month and even was underhanded in charging me twice a month of those fees. When I reported this to AOL a representative tried to claim to me that I had two accounts which was not true and made up a bogus account of taking my first, middle, and last name intials with my area zupcode to create this phony account.

When I tried to cancel my account they refused to accept my refusal and kept persisting giving me benefits and more days and hours free, which would not equal to the amount of money they stole from my checking account. Which brings me to the next case of trying to have at the time Chevy Chase Bank. I had been banking with Chevy Chase for over 3 years at the time and they did nothing to really help. If anything they made matter worse. They informed me that they would do an investigation of the matter of AOL taking so money from my account. The investigation conveniently being short lived with a representive of Chevy Chase gave me a letter in the mail told me that this was by my name and agreement.

When I specifically informed them they could take out the normal monthly fee of $23.90 per month. I informed Chevy Chase that AOL has done other underhanded things with consumers and the Chevy Chase Representives were not paying attention to me. The AOL scam brought me to a level of having to pay the bank of over $1800 dollars. I told Chevy Chase Bank that I was in the process with the Maryland State Attorney General's office, and if they could just give me time to get my refund of money.

Chevy Chase wasted no time at all getting a credit agency against me for the money that was fleeced out of my account by AOL. It took over 8 months to win my 1800 dollars back from AOL and I had to pay Chevy Chase Bank the money before I had the chance to settle my differences with AOL even when I paid off the balance with the bank, representives sent me letters that I still had a debt to pay which was not true and were not quick to take my name off of the credit agencie's lists. When the bank was paid I made sure that all accounts with Chevy Chase Bank were canceled and closed out so AOL can not access the account.

The Maryland Attorney General's Office informed me that the funds were placed back into an account. Chevy Chase was not informing me of the returned money hoping they could keep this money and I would not be aware because the accounts were closed out only a week after the discovery of Anerica On Line charges. It is my believe that this was double plot by American On Line and Chevy Chase Bank to rip me off of funds. I strongly advise people not to do business with either of these companies. There are other reports from other sources informing of corrupted business with Chevy Chase Bank and American On Line

Not Victim Bashing

AUTHOR: Dave - (Canada)

While there are a number of responses on RoR that could be called Victim Bashing, most of the aren't.

The wording could be nicer in a lot of responses, but most of them point out where the OP went wrong. While it looks like victim bashing, this is in fact useful in helping other people avoid the very scam / ripoff that the original complaint was about.

AOL is evil. If it is a necessary evil for someone, they need to make sure they know what they've agreed to. I suspect that AOL makes more money on over-charges than they do on regular membership fees.

Victim Bashing as a Response ?

AUTHOR: Kathy - (U.S.A.)

For those of you who jump on here and start bashing victims for their complaints, and hardships, your missing the point!

Each story has a purpose for being on here... someone was wronged!

AOL has ripped off many people for unwarranted fee's as well as Chase Bank. Since when does any online service warrant 2 and 300 dollars for fee's (for what?) where in the fine print does it say anything about those fee's? The small fee you mentioned (Brian) is a far cry from what this person was charged!

At some point Brian... you will be wronged... it will cost you allot of time and money... and you will jump right back on here and want to whine to everyone about it and expect some empathy.... well you wont get mine!

If we the people just sit back and let these monster companies keep ripping us off... then we are fools! We need to keep informing each other in order to have the strength to fight back.
It is no different than warning our children about drugs that can ruin their lives!

If you don't mind standing alone (Brian) then more power to you! As for myself, I totally support John in his quest to warn people about his tragedy... and if only one person gets wise to these schemes, then he has performed his civic duty as a US citizen to help us, the people!

John... Thankyou for taking the time to tell your story. My brother was ripped of for allot of money by AOL, and never recouped a dime of it!

To anyone else reading this... there is strength in numbers... we never have to stand alone...
God first, Family second, and we (the people) of a Great Nation third. Never be afraid to reach out for help.

Read the fine print

AUTHOR: Brian - (U.S.A.)

John,

First of all. I had the same situation, I have a checking and savings account, as well as a line of credit for overdraft protection with Chevy Chase Bank since February of 2002, and I am nothing but happy with the bank.

Now to address your AOL issue, I also had aol deducted from my checking account, first of all, if you pay with a checking account rather than a credit card, you are billed an additional 4.95 for a processing fee, it is clearly stated in the agreement, 2, it is not AOL's job to contact you and ask you what you want to do when the trial period is over, if you want to cancel, you have to be firm with them, if you read the customer agreement, it states that if after the free trial, you have not cancelled, your membership will be transformed into a regular membership and you will be billed accordingly until you cancel. The bottom line is get the facts straight before you complain.
