June 2007, I took out a $3000.00 loan from American General Finance, Mt Vernon, Wa. The loan was secured by a used vehicle that I purchased for school.  The payments were $125.53/mo and the loan period was June 07 - April 08.

Nov 07, I recieved a letter from the headquarters office in In. refunding to my account $392.00 for insurance.  That was never credited to my account but I found it was added to the balance as were all payments made.

April 08, of course the loan had a huge balance by this time.  There was one month I had added one month past the payoff date to extend one payment.  However, on my credit reports with all three bureaus it shows that I have had three separate loans with AGF.  Now, it shows that I have a "charge off" next to that they put in a consumer statement, "Customer's wife took responsibility of the loan.  Currently, deceased or divorced".  Interesting, as my wife is with me and not on this contract.  We have had a problem with identity theft and that could allow them to think they could get away with scamming certain customers.

Several of months ago, AGF began coming to our home, daily.  They would call over and over.  They even accepted arrangements from my wife who was not on the loan.  They literally harassed us.  We know they were up to something as we found some loan papers that were never signed by us or them.  Then, my wife put all of the monthly payments due on excel.  The balance went to the exact same amounts shown on the statements.  Nov 07 when the insurance was refunded they now state another loan was done.  April 08 when the loan should have been paid off, they also state another loan was opened.  Now, I am unable to obtain the title from them.  They obviously do not want the vehicle or they could have taken it.  Not legally, though.  So, has anyone else had this type of problem with this company?

#1 UPDATE EX-employee responds

AUTHOR: Cheryl - (United States of America)

POSTED: Sunday, August 29, 2010

To the gentleman in Mt. Vernon, WA.

I am an ex-employee of American General Finance.  I worked for the company for 3 yrs.  I quit Jan. of this year due to that I didn't want to work for an unethical company anymore.  What you have described in your letter is a very common practice with AGF.  That is not the half of it.  They will continue to harass you no matter what.  If you filled out the paper with references on it, they will call them too.  When you do finally get caught up, then they will continue to call to solicit you.   It's a vicious circle.  I suggest that you try to figure out a way to pay it off.  Don't go to Citifinancial either, they are exactly the same.  You do need to find out about those 3 loans on your credit report.  You do not want to have a charge off on your credit.  I am a little confused about them telling you that there was another loan opened.  If they used the same title that is not legal.  The original loan would've had to been refinanced, but you would had to have signed the papers.  Like I said, very unethical.
