American Income Life scam misleading employment opportunities, unethical hiring practices, NO benefits Nationwide

Like many other college graduates seeking employment in 2002, I had become very frustrated with my search. Then, one day, I receive a voice-mail from the Human Resources department for American Income, stating that they want to set up an interview for me immediately. Great! I thought, the search may be coming to an end!

I attended the interview and was told that the hiring process there required at least three interviews, and that if I was deemed eligible for the position, I would be invited back for another interview. Of course, I was invited back.

I arrived the next day, only to find that about 25 other people were also there. I was greatly discouraged by this, but bought into the pitch of making a lot of money.

Long story short, I accepted the position and began the next week. I was told that I would recieve training for my licensure. I received no training. I was told that I had to order the book and then study on my own over the next week before the exam.

After passing the exam, I began my "sales training". Up until this point, I was under the impression that I was being hired for a management position. I only discovered a couple weeks later, by accident, that no one was considered a manager-in-training as the job posting indicated, but simply contracted agents!

I was also told that my management career would be accelerated if I participated in booking interviews. This process involved calling anyone with a resume on an internet job site to offer them this "exciting opportunity". It is, as one person on this site alluded to, all scripted. We were told to lie to them when they asked questions about the position, particularly with respect to compensation (there are no salary positions available, as is stated in the script). "Anything to get them in the door" Of course, my management career never accelerated. It is based purely on performance.

The hours are indeed long. I worked about 80 hours a week, and traveled almost 200 miles a day. I was never compensated for these expenses and other expenses, including briefcase, gas, food, or even licensure. I was told during the interview that I would be given a health insurance "allowance", but I was never offered such a benefit.

The method of selling insurance there is also deceptive. Perhaps the worst part of it is the fact that we were required to call current policy holders to try and set up appointments to "go over their policy with them". Many times, their clients would be called 2-3 times a week!

I left the position on a Friday, so as to insure that I would at least receive my last paycheck for a pitiful $300, which is a far cry from the $800-$1200 that they say you can make a week in your first month. My total income while working there for two months was $1,000! Pathetic.

During my last two weeks, I avoided booking interviews by disconnecting the phone I was using, and even hiding in the copy room. I hated doing it. I hated lying to people. During my last week, I went through the motions, almost avoiding making a sale, so that I knew I wasn't leaving money on the table for them to take. As I said, I left on a Friday, so that I could ensure that I would receive my weak paycheck.

I urge anyone considering employment with this company to look elsewhere. I apologize to all of the people that I did book on interviews (10-15 I think). I apologize to all of the policy holders I hassled.

I am not revealing which state I live in or agency I worked for, because of an agreement I signed not to discourage prospective employees from joining. However, the story is the same across the country I am sure. I encourage anyone who has been ripped off by AIL to step out and report it!

Clay, I worked with you and with many of the other members of the Zophin Agency and you know as well as I know that the job sucks. Yes the pay is good but only if you have a super week bringing in at least $4,000 net alp than you will receive a paycheck of about 1000 bucks if everything goes well. But I dont want to work 12 hour days to do that. Yeah its hard work but its not worth it. Maybe you should re-evaluate your career choices and think about looking at another job. Why do you think I left. I was the youngest agent there. Its because of the unethical practices that the company itself employed. Not the people. The people are great couldnt have been better and the morale was kept up, but the job was just misrepresented...

You know but through all my doubt at the company the best thing that happened to me is I became an insurance agent with unlimited potential to create a wealth of opprotunity for myself. I among the other agents have the potential to turn that into something. Just not with this company. So do you!

I work in the Middletown office and I'm ashamed that we hired a person with a work ethic like joel. I don't lie to my hires or my clients and would never encourage that. I would also never encourage anyone to lie to their employers. For example, dissconecting your phone while you're pretending to work, or hiding in a closet to avoid responsibility or worst of all not properly taking care of our clients because of a grudge you had against the company. You have certainly showed you character in black and white for all to see here in this forum and I think it's pretty obvious as to why you didn't work out at AIL.

I have been with AIL for many years and have read many similar "assinine" stories and complaints about this company. Most of them couldn't be any further from the truth.

During my very long journey I have witnessed first hand and have met thousands of people who have had their lives changed by this great company in many positive ways.

Everything is explained in great detail to everyone that is brought aboard to this company. No one forced "Joel" or other people to come aboard. It always come down to the same thing for people like "Joel," they are never willing to look themselves in the mirror and take full responsibility for their own actions. They are always looking to blame "others" for their failures instead of looking themselves straight in their own eyes and say "It is me, and nothing other than myself who is responsible for my own results." These people have to have pitty parties and use sites like this to reach out to others to try to justify everything they weren't willing to do to be suuccessful.

I feel sorry for people like "Joel," because until the day people like him are willing to change and grow-up, all of their past failures will continue to be the "roadmap" of their own personal "non-successes" for the rest of their lives.

American Income is a GREAT company. It allows anyone who is willing to step up to the plate and "take responsibility" for their own actions to be successful. I t doesn't discriminate against any race, religion, sex, age, or any professional backround. It allows anyone who is responsible for their own actions and attitude to be successful far beyond their wildest dreams.

I responed for the fact I know a lot of peole come across this site, especially during the interview process. I would hate to see someone miss out on a "Life Changing Opportunity," because they read the comments of people who will continue to be falures at everything they try in life unless they are willing to change.

This company has changed my life, I hope you are willing to keep an open mind and not "Buy" into this B.S. so you can have an opportunity to change your own.

American Income Life appears to have been investigated...

According to http://www.markcolbert.com/banner.html, life insurance investigators were investigating American Income Life Insurance for, among other things, agent training procedures.

I am curious if the above poster (Dee in Appleton, Maine) is still with AIL. She mentioned 8 people leaving since she started. Turnover in some financial services companies is VERY high. People who are very positive about their company while they're there seem to lose this enthusiasm after leaving due (often due to lack of income) and no longer getting regular pep talks (which can border on cultic). The original poster (Joel in Middletown) alleged among other things:
* an unsolicited call for a job he had not applied for
* incentives for recruiting others
* a cattle-call interview/orientation
* misrepresentation income, benefits, job duties, and advancement opportunities
* deception of potential clients in order to get sales
These appear to be rather characteristic of a particular employment scam in the financial services industry that has proliferated in recent years. Several months ago I was considering a position with American Income. In the course of my research, I came upon the critical comments posted to this site, and was scared to death.

With great caution, I continued the interview and training process, watching for the awful things I had heard about. In all honesty, I personally, found none. I work out of an office in Maine, and perhaps, like most large companies, different offices reflect different leadership. ... that said, I have to post these comments regarding my own experience: I have found the highest degree of integrity and professionalism within my office and the people I work with. They presented a balanced view of the job, and I have found everything I was told to be accurate. It is not an EASY job, and it's not for everyone. I have seen 8 people come and go since I started. I HAVE made money, MORE than I anticipated. The management/leadership HAS been honest and supportive.... my experience has been very, very positive. If you are considering a position with American Income... look at the position carefully, with eyes wide open. Use your best judgement as to the integrity of the leadership in your office... look at the responsibilities critically. If you have a sense of confidence in your own ability to do the job, and if you're stubborn enough to see it through the first (grueling) 90 days... it is a GREAT opportunity. Truely.
