Phone message left from American Legal Services - boasting outstanding claims against me, if I do not call immediately the district attorney will be arresting me...etc. I've been through this similar scam before...had to get my attorney involved in order to stop the harrassing calls; it even took my attorney several attempts before they stopped. The person that calls can barely speak english and is reading from a script, the noise in the back round suggests a room full of such operators all calling with the same message.

Offshore scam

AUTHOR: Flynrider - (USA)

An attorney isn't going to do much good with these guys.  It's an offshore scam.  They're using Internet phones for communications.   The key to the scam is to scare you into thinking you're going to be arrested and getting you to give them your credit/debit card information.

The best you can do is to tell them you are aware that it's a scam and not to bother calling you anymore.   It might also help to tell them that you've reported their number to various federal agencies.   Once they realize that they're not going to scare you into paying money that you don't owe, they'll move on to someone else.

The real downside to this is that they actually do have your personal information.  According to reports here, they have enough info to commit identity theft.   While these particular scammers don't appear to be doing that, there's nothing to stop them from selling your info to crooks that might.    I'd recommend going to the FTC's identity theft web page and following the recommendations there.
