This report is long in the making. Almost a year ago, December 22, 2006 I took my daughter and my two grandchildren to the Amtrac Station in downtown Dallas, I droppd my daughter off at the front so she could go get checked in. Before I could get parked and get my grandchildren unbuckled my daughter met me at the curb, visibly upset. They told her, her bag was over weight, first point, overweight for a train! When I offered to pay any fee, they refused. Upset we attempted to reajust the bags, to this the women at the counter told us no. We had to get check in then or they would not check her in. I explained how rediculious that was, when a supervisor in the back took exception and told the one checking us in, not to check us in, we where to late.
This is a long story but I want to highlight a few points and end with a warning and suggestion.
They refused to checkin my grandson's car seat, brand new, my daughter had to carrier it her bags and two children on the train.

The same supervision who refuesed to let us check in was at the train telling the conductor my daughter was a trouble maker and the conductor refused to let my daughter on the train. She had to pled and cry. So much for humane kindness and dignity. Every time the children would move once on the train they where told to sit down or they would be put off.

They told my granddaughter 9 at the time they had put me her grandmother in jail, when in fact I was on the phone with the Dallas Police Dept. fileing a report, the the check in clerk had toss the car seat out the check in window and hit my three year old grand son.
These are some of the most horrible moments and the memories hurt so bad it hard to write even now.
I got a hold of a Amtrac supervisor Joy Smith I explained the whole story to her and that I wished to press charges on the two employees that had cause all the trouble. She ask me to let her check into it and she would call me back. I was never able to get her back on the phone but my daughter did, Joy called us both liers and said there would be know refund or credit. Her cell phone number is listed, everyone should call and wish her the best Christmas Amtrac has to offer.
I suggestion to others thinking about traveling on Amtrac and when you here there is legislation trying to get additional funding for Amtrac call whoever you need to to be heard. The railroad is subsidised by the federal goverment, and we are the goverment. Or we where the last time I read the constitution.

I misread nothing. You are still attempting to equate what you get from a US Government employee as "customer service". They do not consider you to be a 'customer", as their employment is not dependent upon you being happy. Since your happiness means nothing to them, they have no need to correct their behaviour. The US Gov't owns AMTRAK. The employees are US DoT workers. They are unionized. They cannot be fired for anything short of intentionally killing someone.

I find the weight issue to be goofy, but again...what do you expect from a team of geniuses who strip search middle-aged white women, while ignoring the 20 yr old with a bad attitude and no luggage, simply because they don't want to be accused of "profiling". Here's a clue...PROFILING WORKS! Too much weight on an airplane would be a problem. What kind of problem is there on a train that weighs a million pounds to begin with? But, that's what you get with Government lackeys. Every one of the employees you dealt with was making about $6/hr before the TSA took over. Their rate of pay went up 3-4 fold, but their IQ's remained in the low 80's.

Your entire post should be forwarded to another US Government employee...your Senator and/or Congressman. I think you should be given an apology at the very least. Maybe one of them could explain why this crap happens.

From the official AMTRAK website:
"Amtrak was created by Congress in 1970 to take over the passenger rail services previously required to be operated by private freight railroad companies in the United States. The companies reported they had operated the services without profit for a decade or more."

It looks to me the term "Amtrak was created by Congress..." means Congress created it. As such, it is OWNNED by the US Government.

"The name "Amtrak" is the blending of the words "America" and "track." It is properly used in documents with only the first letter capitalized. The railroad is also known as the National Railroad Passenger Corporation."

"A for-profit company that has never been profitable, Amtrak is almost wholly owned by the US Department of Transportation and depends on subsidies from the federal government to maintain its operations."

The term "almost wholly owned by the US DoT" means just that. The US Government OWNS it, with a few other small investors picking up the remaining shares. The "subsidies" are the equivalent of what we give the UN. We pay for just about everything, while the rest pay for nearly nothing. In effect, we OWN the UN.

AMTRAK is owned by the US Government. Show me ONE thing it does correctly.

I am and was stressing the treatment by paid employees the service and treatment of my family. We were treated with outright anger and mean spitfullness.

I do not appreiate Robert from Jacksonville's verbage about people, I do understand his frustration with the goverment and Robert misread because I never stated the Federal Goverment owned Amtrac but do subsidise. There is never an excuse for any company, to mistreat there customers. If you will also take notice, we where trying to conform, and they refused. So if I read Mike from River Edge correctly if I the customer over looks there rules and reg. I should be treated subhumane and all bets are off. My grandson, deserved to be hit with the car seat, and my granddaughter brought to tears with lies about there grandmother being placed in jail. I'm sure I must be reading what you are saying wrong also.

First and foremost, their restrictions are posted right on the website, and I am sure they are probably on the ticket you purchased somewhere.

Secondly, to the person who said Amtrak is run by the govt, he is incorrect. Amtrak is SUBSIDIZED by the government, the same way airlines are due to it being deemed a "public necessity".

I mean, really! AMTRAK is owned and operated by the US Government. Can you name even ONE thing they do correctly? ONE?!

Remember, the same US Government that runs AMTRAK is thesame one that took a bunch of minimum wage retards doing airport security, and made them $20/hr retards doing airport security. These are the same retards who refuse to identify the ONE group responsible for ALL of the terrorism on this planet for the past 40 yrs. The same group who will strip search an old white women in a walker, breathing through a mask...while letting the actual "PROFILE" walk through unhindered.

Now, name ONE thing the US Government does correctly.

Perhaps you should have reviewed Amtrak's luggage restricts. They clearly state the weight limit and sizes for carry ons and checked luggage and their strict limitations. It took me all of 15 seconds to find them.
