Any company can sign up to become a member of the list with no screening process whatsoever and while Angie's List offers to intercede if your job goes wrong, there is nothing they can do legally if the contractor doesn't feel like honoring a guarantee because their punishment is merely a bad review and a ban from Angies List. In fact there are many companies on the list with absolutely no member reviews at all.
SAVE YOUR MONEY, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH BEFORE YOU HIRE A CONTRACTOR. The Better Business Bureau helps you find questionable companies, every state has a department of professional regulation to investigate contractors as well as a Medical Board to help you check out doctors licensure regardless of specialties.
Angie's is very quick to point out that they make no claims about company reliability or licensure status etc. so why are you going to flip 30.00 plus dollars a year when I can get the me review from coworkers, neighbors for free or do my own research? I'd rather donate that thirty dollars to the homeless.
