I attended Angus and Coote at Charlestown Square on Friday 17th January, 2014. I was wearing a less than one year old Seiko Kinetic Divers watch, which after not wearing for about two months, had put it on about an hour previously, and saw that the second hand was not working properly.I spoke with a staff member, showed her my watch, and she then took my watch out to a back room of this store, to allegedlt show the watch repair staff member. Only a few minutes later she returned with my watch, and stated that it had certain items that were broken or not working properly, and that the cost of repair would be $220. (The watch is only about $210 new). She also told me this was caused by my not wearing this watch often enough.
I left the store and immediately went to another nearby jewellery store, where I showed this watch to the Manager. She took the watch off me, shook it for about 3 seconds, and the second hand immediately started working properly again, and has not missed a beat since. She told me that since I had not worn this watch for some time, it just needed this action to kick start it again.
Angus and Coote Charlestown sell Seiko watches, so they should have a fair knowledge of the workings of these watches. They made no attempt to shake the watch properly. To quote a price for repair without first opening up the watch is just a straight con job, as all reputable Jewellery stores inAaustralia will only quote a price for repair after first checking the watch properly, by opening it up, and then will first charge a nominal fee for this, and then give the customer a quote. The customer can then decide if they want to go ahead with the repair or not. None of this was done by Angus and Coote.
This appears to be a straight forward attempt to obtain as much money from me without doing anything to the watch, and making a very large profit for their trouble. It is impossible to quote a price for a repair without knowing what is wrong with the watch, and to do this, you have to open it up. You can't quote a price to repair a broken down car, without first opeing up the bonnet and looking at the engine.
I do not know if it is just the one staff member who was trying to rip me off, or the store makes a habit of this type of behaviour, but all watch owners should be aware of this practice.
