- Yes because she committed IDENTITY THEFT. She had enough information to open an account.
Why didn`t the bank check to see if it was actually me that filled out the application? I filled out a credit card application online last year with another bank, they called me two days later before approving it to actually see if it was me
Credit cards and most creditors are not going to go through additional steps to verify it is the person actually applying for the loan in most cases. These exceptions include something does not match what is on your credit report(such as address), or you have no credit yet that they can verify against. If you are saying that you were called then that is not the norm, and most likely you triggered some alert for them to do that.
However, you can put a Fraud Alert on your credit report. This REQUIRES them to do the additional verification on any application that pulls your credit report. Now, the problem in your case is that even if they do this, and you are still living together there is a good possibility that your wife would still know enough to "verify" your identity.
If you want to do this you can get a 90 day alert. If you want an extended alert(7 years) you MUST provide them with a police report showing identity theft.

I do not know(and it really does not matter) what your current relationship is with your wife. So this may or may not be something you want to hear. If you do not file fraud charges on your wife you will be held responsible for the debt. Because they will figure(whether it is the cae or not) that you are in this with your wife to defaud them. Now, if you do file fraud charges on your wife you will no longer be responsible for the debt. But you have no control over what they will do to her. Depending on the situation at best they would just require her to pay it back, at worst they would prosecute her and she could end up in jail.
Good Luck.
