I wanted to check my own background to see what prospective employers would see without having to subscribe to a service I'd have to cancel, sounds easy, right? Wrong. I checked reviews and found that BeenVerified.com offers a one time criminal background check for $19.95 with a seemingly honest disclaimer that states they do not guarantee the report is accurate or up-to-date. What they fail to disclose is that they are well aware of which counties and municipalities have digitized their information (you must read their FAQ to find this), furthermore, they at least have an idea of how often the information is updated, so they could at least give a rough estimate of how recent the information will be. Therefore, they should warn you that to get the information you paid $19.95 for, you must be looking for records in one of the few counties they have in their database (in my case, there were only records for the largest populated counties/municipalities in Kansas). So, if you are looking for records from a town or city that isn't a metropolis, they probably don't have them and you will have to pay an additional $14.95 per county to get a "court-runner" to obtain them for you and this may take a few days. I'm sure disclosing this information would dramatically reduce their sales, so they unethically choose not to.
