LET THE BUYER BEWARE!  A new "Low" for the return policy of this Corporation.  Even if you comply with all of the stringent, and restrictive rules of their return policy they still put conditions on the return which they do not disclose up front at time of purchase.

Purchased a product with a credit card.  Went back the next day with the receipt, original unopened packaging, and the original bag, they said they would not accept the return without me surrendering my driver's license so that they can scan it to "track my purchases".  I refused (even the store manager refused!) and I wrote a scathing letter to Corporate headquarters.

There is a tremendous amount of personal data on our driver's licenses that this scanning process reveals to Best Buy (and who knows who else Best Buy shares this information with?)!  With all of the Data Breeches lately (Target and many others) why would you want them to have this information, which they have no right to, to begin with?   What audacity on the part of this company!!!

It sure is becoming increasily clear who works for who...

AUTHOR: DiverPaul - ()

When you look at the other 1741 complaints about Best Buy on this site alone, you start to see a very clear trend that Best Buy has a problem with their return policy.  And the rebuttals sure do have a very familiar theme and bias to them as if they are all written by the same group of Hacks that are hired by Corporate America to defend their unethical and anti-consumer practices.

Have you noticed these rebuttals takes on an insulting and personal nature?  Do they attempt to discredit and attack anyone and everyone with hard core tatics?  Sure smells like a rotten egg.  Having a previous background in consumer law and consumer protection, it appears to me that your points are all over the map and without merit and many of the original points were not even addressed.  I would suggest you check your sources regarding your assertions regarding that this confidential information is available any time someone is stopped for an offense as well as the other groundless points you are making.  The consumer privacy laws in effect since 2005 have addressed this.  Anyone  also knows these driver's licenses contain a lot more than what you asserting, as the states require much more to obtain their license.

My suggestion to other consumers is not to let these questionable Rebuttal individuals bully you into not pursuring further acton against unfair business practices.  File a report with the Better Business Bureau; write to Corporate and express you dissatisfacton with their policies; report the incident to the State' Attorney office and go on to other sites to file a complaint.  This is the only way Best Buy will change or at least modify their policies to reflect how the other reputable Big Box stores handle their returns more equitably and fairly.  And finally do not patronize Best Buy, as so many other customers have committed to do, as they have stated in their complaints.  And Yes, my refund is forthcoming without giving up my drivers license to be scanned.

Whine a little harder...

AUTHOR: Tyg - ()

Whine a little harder why dont ya!! They do it to protect themselves from people who will purchase a item then go back and steal it and then return it WITH a reciept. This way if they find that YOUR return was a FAKE return and used only to make you profit they can go after you in a court of law. It always amazes me the sheer stupidity of the general consumer. Your drivers liscence is NOT yours, it is a document from the state. ANY person in law enforcment can request your ID.

Your so quick to jump on the "big box" band wagon and villify them. You wish to assign machivelian motives to them when all they are doing is protecting themselves from scammers. I lump you right into that catagory. YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO A RETURN!!!!! PERIOD!! There is no law in the land that states YOU get a refund. Refunds are done in the spirit of customer service.

When you deal with high end electronics you have to take a few extra security steps. But YOU dont get that. You would rather hop online and spew your bile all over the web, sorry but we have enough nutjobs from the tinfoil hat brigade thank you, your input is not nessasary. YOU chose to balk the return process, well then you can leave and hopefully you come to your senses BEFORE the 15 day return window is closed.

There is no more information that is on your liscence that IS NOT available online. Its WHY they took little things like your social number off. Its a bare bones identification designed to allow you to prove that YOU are YOU. Stop being so damned paranoid. Stop and think how many times you have given over YOUR personal information without ever thinking about it.

When you stop and realize that your information is ALREADY OUT THERE, then what you did at BB is all on YOU and YOU just fighting the return system on PRINCIPLE. Unfortunatly YOUR principle isnt going to get the item you purchased returned. Each and every time you get pulled over your information is being collected and TRANSMITTED. Each time an American citizen gets arrested their personal information is available for ANYONE to see.

And before you start, NOPE dont work for them or ANY bigbox retailer. Just a consumer like yourself who has a bit more clarity. You are fighting a loseing battle when you balk the system. The "system" is in place to protect each party that participates in it. They need your information to prove that you either are or are not a thief or serial returner. If you have such a problem with them asking for your information during a return, then just either dont shop there or dont return anything. The last item I had to return was a box fan from walmart about 10 years ago.

Even then they wanted my DL for information purposes. All I wanted was an exchance as the fan did not fire up straight out of the box. As someone who has worked retail, I understand that there is a process and if I wanted resolution to my problem I had to go through the process. Walmart did not know if I was trying to pull a fast one on them and moved accordingly by asking me for my info. Every retailer has had to take steps such as these due in large part to the very same customers that they get.

The consumer will lie and cheat and scam to get their way. They have no problem justifying scamming to get their way, they justify it in a similar fashion as you have. Oh its the "BigBox" store they can take a hit. What the individual consumer refuses to see is that they are just ONE of THOUSANDS on a daily basis looking to scam something for nothing. Given those odds its understandable that they have increased the information needed to do a return. SO they are NOT singling YOU out, they do it to everyone.

You state "How hard is it to do XX" the same question can be leveled at yourself. "How hard is it to give them your information to do a return?" Its not difficult at all. Your just playing into the mainstream media fears. Yes Target got hit on the holiday season, and yes it was a horrible thing that they got hacked. But NOTHING is going to stop hacking. They make a better mouse trap and a better mouse shows up. Its the nature of tech. One would think that since you shop at a BB would mean you have SOME tech savvy.

This means its common knowledge for you. Just because Target got hacked all those months ago, doesnt mean BB WILL be hacked. So all of this is just you pushing back against a system that you are familiar with. They have EVERY right to the information when you do a return and you know this, you just chose to fight it under some flimsy pretence of "information security".

Once you found that you couldnt fight it you then hop online and spread your particular brand of ignorance in some vain attempt to garner you some online sympathy. Get over yourself and give them the information they requested or just dont shop there anymore. Youre complaining about the way things are, when you should be trying to change your fellow man so that these practices are no longer needed. If the consumer was HONEST and didnt rob them blind in selfish attempts to make it ahead on the backs of others these return practices wouldnt be needed.

Have to wonder why some people are so senstitive to consumer comments...

AUTHOR: DiverPaul - ()

The core issues of a return policy, that was never disclosed by a "big box" retailer at point of purchase, are still very much alive and well.  The issues of where all of your confidential information that Best Buy just demanded without merit, are also still up for question.  A driver's license is also requested by other "big box" retailers (Lowes, Target, Walart, Home Depot among many others-but not scanned) when you do not have a receipt, and this is the crucial difference and is fair and equitable.

If you do not want consumers to have the right to return merchandise (or to make it very difficult to do so) then disclose it up front so they can make informed decisions if they wish to partronize the store in question and give up their confidential information and their basic consumer rights.

You have to wonder if these retailers contract with paid reviewers (as has been the subject of articles in the Washington Post and other publications) and thus defend and try and minimize legatimate complaints by consumers.

And, how much does it really "cost" the retailer to have an employee take a 30 second walk and return a perfectly good, unopened box to a shelf for resale?

Now that you've had your rant, there's a good reason they want your license information...

AUTHOR: Ken - ()

It's entered in a database to track serial returners.  Too many people return too many items which DO cost them money.

It's so out of hand that MANY retaillers are using this system.  If you make too many returns within a set timeframe, the system will disallow returns until another set time period has been met..usually 90 days.

At least I guess you feel better after having a fit and falling in it.  Due to you not following their guidelines, I would guess you didn't get a refund...right?  You showed them!
