Stopped in Best Buy today to pick up a CD for my daughter to give her Dad for Christmas.  It's a pretty lame CD, but that's what she wanted to get him.  It was $12.99, no big deal.  Got it home to start wrapping it, and as most people do, I peeled off the price sticker.  Much to my surprise, the original barcoded sticker read $9.99...$3 LESS than what they slapped their big yellow sticker on!  I checked my receipt, thinking maybe they only charged me the $9.99 price, (I bought a few other things there, so I didn't see any red flags at the register), but they did charge the marked up price of $12.99.  Now, I know it's only $3, but the fact that Best Buy would mark items UP 3 days before Christmas, in this economy, is a pretty douche bag move!  I called them right away, to give them the chance to make things right.  Without telling them what was purchased, just asking the girl on the phone if Best Buy ALWAYS marks up their merchandise over the holidays, I was given the response of: "the lower price was the introductory price, now it's selling at full, regular price". [continued below]....
.....  Unbelievable!  All I could do was laugh.  Nice move, Best Buy.

Not silly

AUTHOR: Ashley - (U.S.A.)

I don't think you are silly. I just don't see the point of your story. Best buy explained to you what happened. People here have explained to you what happened. Its all common business practice. The only place they messed up is they should have taken the old tag off before putting on the new one. Again, not a rip off.

LMAO!

AUTHOR: Honest sam - (U.S.A.)

Shocking - a retailer actually changed the price on merchandise?  You mean they always sell an item at the same price from the beginning to the end of time?  If they can raise the price on an item and it still sells (which it obviously did since you bought one) how is that wrong on their part?  They're in business to make money, not hold your hand and sing kumbaya.

Epic fail on your part for not having any understanding how retail works.

Thanx you, Unhappy!

AUTHOR: mamagagoosh - (USA)

Thank you, Unhappy!  It IS a VERY stupid cd, that I would NEVER buy for myself!  lol  So the extra $3 is like salt in an open wound! tee hee hee  Since yesterday, a lot of people I know have "come out of the woodwork" to express their Best Buy horror stories.
I get what everyone is saying, but you're right to say they're kind of missing the point.  Business is business, I know, I understand that.  But just how nice would it be in today's set of circumstances, to see that someone (aka: big business...da man...) actually cares and wants to cut people a break?  Unrealistic and idealistic...sure.  I was trying to make a simple, silly point.  I was in no way taking the "down with Best Buy" stance!  So for people who don't know me to make it personal and call me silly and imply that I was basically an idiot...well...that was a little magoo and unnecessary. You seem to "get" where I was going with that, so again I say thank you, and Merry Christmas!  I hope you get your money back very soon!

I agree with You Phoenix consumer

Best Buy is just the worst.  it is the principle of the fact. Even if retailers mark up prices good for them. But,  they should be wise enough or take the original 9.99 sticker off as to not piss people off like Mama.   Best Buy doesn't care.  Try to get a human through customer service pass the buck hotline.  They are notorious for Bait and Switch and piss poor customer service.  Sad when plenty of folks would love to have a job right now.

They have my money right now on an order via online that they adverstised in stock through online confirmed shipping 3 times LOL and through my finally reaching (after 2 hours on hold) a nice lady at the warehouse. She confessed it is discontinued.  WOW nice.  Incompent communication. Online vs. Store  he said she said.  All I know is they can take your money just fine.  Can't wait to get my $775.00 back.

Happy Holidays to you mamag!  P.S. that CD is lame lol  making the 3 buck markup all the more ridiculous.

: )  la la la   sing along... "10 thousand fire flies and Best Buy's lies dancing through my head!!!

p.s. best buy if you can't peel the sticker off,  Sharpies are a must have for all Merchants  DUH!

the response makes sense...

AUTHOR: Edgeman - (U.S.A.)

From the OP:

"I was given the response of: "the lower price was the introductory price, now it's selling at full, regular price"."

That's not unheard of. For example, go to WalMart on a Tuesday and buy a copy of a movie that was just released that day (let's say District 9). Note the price that WalMart charges for it on release day and then go back next week and note that the same movie will cost more.

The difference here is that someone at Best Buy didn't remove the original price tag.

Mark ups before a holiday? Don't let that get out, florists might start charging more for long stem roses on Valentine's Day.

Thank you & Merry Christmas!

AUTHOR: mamagagoosh - (USA)

Wow...thanks for making it personal!  I don't believe I was attacking anyone specifically on a personal level, just venting feeling a little ripped off by a huge, faceless chain.  But bringing back on foolish sounding me...?   I hope that made you feel pretty powerful, smart, witty and better about yourself to put me down.  Well, Merry Christmas anyways.  And thank you for schooling me on the biz savvy ways of the world, that I am apparently not evolved enough to grasp...

Really?

AUTHOR: mamagagoosh - (USA)

I worked in retail for many years, as well.  And I am aware that prices fluctuate.  If this was the case, they should have peeled off the lower price and THEN put the new price on.  Not put the higher price on a sticker OVER the original price.  It happens everywhere, and I have heard of many retailers RAISING their prices this week, knowing that shoppers are scrambling the week of a major gift giving holiday, AND will most likely not stop to question the prices...as they are just wanting to get their shopping done.  Do you work for Best Buy, or something?  Do you know that this is not what has happened?

Oh boy do you sound foolish, every mass marketer in the world changes prices as they wish and you are suprised that prices went up for the holiday season. Hooo Boy

Standard practice

AUTHOR: Ashley - (U.S.A.)

Did you ever stop to think that the 12.99 is the normal price for the CD and that the 9.99 price is a sale price? Typically when a CD is released a store will put it on sale for a cheaper price. Once its been out for a while they take it off sale and put it the same price as their other CDs.

This is not a best buy issue, this is fairly standard retail practice. The last retail store I worked at we had to peel each individual label of the sale price off and replace it with the new higher regular price.

This is not a ripoff.
