We had a minor leak in the u-trap in our garage wash tub.  The fix was a 10 minutes -- 5 minutes, cut the drain pipe -- 5 minutes slide on a rubber sleeve and tighten metal ring clamps.  Will Kirst, the filed technician arrived and spent about 1.5 hours here trying to cross sell us service contracts and other unnecessary work not requested.

After insisting he get to work and stop the endless sales pitches, he finally gave us a tempoary rubber-sleeve patch instead of braizing on a new piece of pipe.  This took 10 minutes of time.  We were charged $281.62 for 10 minutes of work and an hour and 20 minutes of sales pressure.

He tried desperately to sell us a 2 lb jar of pipe enzyme cleaner for $69.95 even though we a brand new jar of a competing product on hand which we displayed for him.  My domestic partner eventually agreed to the sales pressure when I left the room, she is not the brightest candle on the cake,  and finally agreed to this unwanted and unneeded product.

We called back to Bill the Plumber about 7PM the same evening and requested a refund for return of this drain cleaner.  We also requested that they send back a technician to remove the tempary rubber sleeve and give us a more permanent braized pipe fix as we requested.

Bill, the owner, answer the phone.  His only response was to laugh and state sarcastically that he should have charged us "thousands" of dollars for this service -- in fact we were uncharged.  He explicitly stated that he can only make money if he runs his business like this.  He had no sympathy for us despite "Bill The Plumber offers a full range of products and services with a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee" - See more at: http://www.billtheplumber.com  This was a real slap in the face.

We cannot recommend doing business with this shady character who trains his crew to bait and switch sales tactics, i.e., come out to repair turns into an endless cross sell of unwanted and or needed service agreements.  Actually doing the repair is secondary to service sales pitches.

Major Correction to Report -- Bill the Plumber Makes Good

AUTHOR: Kimberly - ()

POSTED: Tuesday, August 27, 2013

The original report was filed on 7:39, or 8:39 EST, on Monday, Aug 26, 2013 (please note e-mail times reported on this site are recorded in MST or PST.)  The next day, Tuesday, the manager of Bill the Plumber called me in the morning and wanted to correct the situation after reviewing an e-mail I had sent him later Monday night.  The manager insisted I had never spoken with Bill the Plumber or anyone else at Bill the Plumber, much to my amazement.

We agreed he would come out with a different technician on Wednesday morning.  On Wednesday morning, the manager and another technician arrived -- the replacement technician promptly corrected the original plumbing repair to code specification which I felt was a job well-done this time around.

Because the manager was so assertive that I had not spoken with anyone at Bill the Plumber as I originally specified on Monday night, I reviewed the caller ID list on our phone.  I found that I had inadvertently dialed the wrong phone # by one digit.  A middle-plus age man answered that phone call -- I described the problem I had to him.  It was not Bill the Plumber's phone #, and the man who answered the call "punked" me and pretended to be Bill as an apparent a prank to jerk me around.  He laughed, defended the problems I described and had a good time making fun of me, which I unfortunately took to be real.  I was deeply offended by this prankster's harsh comments.

So, I want to emphasize that I never actually spoke with Bill or anyone else at Bill the Plumber on Monday night.  The entire conversation was a hoax by a prankster at an incorrectly dialed phone # -- I am so embarrassed and humbled by this gaffe on my part -- it seemed so real at the time.  The insulting and harassing tone of this prankster triggered me to write this original report which I now regret with the benefit of hind sight.  Bill the Plumber is NOT a shady character, but rather an honorable man.

The manager did set things right in terms of correcting the work to our specification and satisfaction.  However, he defended and had no apologies for his techs actions regarding the aggressive selling of service agreements -- that is Bill the Plumber policy.  He conceded his original tech was a little over zealous in trying to encourage us to buy into a service contract, and should have backed off when we declined the offer.

The manager did accept return of the enzyme drain cleaner they had sold us.  Our total cost out-the-door, after all was said and done, was now about $211 -- which was acceptable.  Bill the Plumber did make good on their satisfaction guarantee!  We are now happy with the service we received.
