Times without a doubt are tough enough. It is therefore not unusual that certain individuals would look to prey on the desperation of those in dire need of some assistance or the other. BRYANT WOODS INN of Columbia MD, is an epitome of one of such organizations. Essentially run by two individuals (mother and son), unsuspecting job seekers are falsely reassured and with little or no information to go with especially pertaining to actual job description and pay rates, are put to work. Position is usually on a "Live-In Service basis" (24 hour round the clock care for geriatric clients including but not limited to lots of lifting, grooming, personal hygiene, general home chores; laundry, cooking, just to mention a few) in exchange for compensation that clearly falls below the mandated minimum wage payment(Usually $4.28/hr or $60/day). It is also not unusual that employees are not informed at interview about actual earnings until the first paycheck is issued, that is, if it is ever issued!! The fallout-severe under-staffing and inadequate client care, often a times with a single staff (usually an unsuspecting new employee) providing round-the-clock care to all residents for no additional pay other than the agreed upon daily compensation! There is also a mandatory two week quit notice that should be adhered to. All of these is in addition to other shady practices which would not be entered here for the sake of decency. As evidenced by statements credited to previous employees these practice has been on for a long time and to say these practices are shady and exploitative would actually be an understatement. Therefore the next time you get a job offer from an organization with the above names, please beware or as an alternative, you could actually go find for yourself!
