Burton Plumbing took my girlfriend for over $600.00 for replacing two heating elements and a control board in her water heater. The water heater is about 15 years old and should have been replaced but they quoted her $1800.00 for a replacement. When I found out what they did I called the owner and talked to him for over an hour about refunding some of her money as the parts could be found and bought for less than $60.00. They clearly took advantage of my girlfriend and over charged her for the service. The owner basically said that the reason the charge is so high is his people keep a fully stocked truck and are certified plumbers and they are the best in the business. I will never do business with Burton, never recommend them and spread the word of how they take advantage and over charge.

Burton came out to fix a plugged pipe under the sink and ended up talking my 85 yr old mother into a new $300 faucet!  Nothing special about the faucet, not a pull out or anything.  Outrageous.

Orange's to Orange's?

AUTHOR: nebguy - ()

This guy MUST work for the company. He states compairing orange's to orange's but does the opposite. How is getting an engine put in your car inline with putting in an water heater? It sounds good but when you read between the lines it makes zero sense.

For one putting in a car engine takes a lot longer and more in depth then a water heater. I could see the charge of 1800 for the water heater if it took more then a few hrs to complete. Even if it took 8 hrs  thats over 225/hr for a water heater that shouldn't take any longer then 3 to complete. Most auto mechanics and dealers charge no more then 100/hr and putting in a engine is going to take a lot longer to complete.

It appears the company and plumbers are just greedy, I'm sure they are paid on commission so the more they charge the more they make. Burton USED to have a good reputation and a A+ rating with the BBB but looking today (04/25/13) they are now a B+.

In todays economy you need to get a second opinion on stuff like this, of course it's the techs job to get the work sold, signed and done before any second opinions can happen

I concur

Plumbers, electricians, mechanics etc etc charge labor fees on top of parts. Cost of doing business. The company I use charges an hourly rate straight off the bat. After hours calls are time and 1/2.

Good plumbers are worth the money. Better than a shoddy one who has to come back time after time for the same problem which usually ends up costing more money. If you think you can do a better job then go for it.

Not a Ripoff

AUTHOR: Rick - (United States of America)

While I understand that the cost was seemingly high and that you may be able to acquire the parts elsewhere for much less money, as a consumer I can't see that anyone was ripped off. If she was presumably presented with an estimate and accepted, then she should have done some research prior to accepting the bid.

Also, when making comparisions, you have to compare apples to apples. I can put a new engine in my car for $1500, whereas it would cost at least double that if I took it to a dealer. That's how companies make a profit. Therefore, ask other professional plumbers what they would charge for the same repair and base your assessment on that figure, not what it would cost to fix it yourself. Also, are the parts the same brand, type, etc? There can be many variations there, too.
