Well, I have just the thing for you! Become a FRANCHISE Consultant helping people get into business for themselves. All it takes is a few days training and about $20,000 and you too will be an expert in franchises.
Sounds like easy money doesn't it?
What is wrong with this picture? The first thing is that for your 20,000 you receive the OPPORTUNITY to buy names from the company, which they have farmed from the internet people who are out looking for a job and happen to check the wrong box, or go to any number of websites whose sole purpose is to get a name and then sell it to up to 10 franchise consultants for $15 to $35 apiece!
If you buy 100 of these names, you will be lucky to find even one qualified candidate to present to a franchise.
It gets better! Suppose you find Joe Blow who happens to have $250,000 lying around, wants to own a Pizza parlor, or a hair-cutting salon, or a transmission shop. You make the introductions, coach the candidate, do all the legwork. What are the chances that you will actually consummate the deal between franchisor and franchisee (aka, the fool and his money)? Pretty slim.
Now when Joe your new best friend does finally spend the money and opens the shop on the promise that Franchising is the safest way to open a business he knows he will take some time to get the business to profitability but he will be vastly rich beyond his wildest dreams. The REALITY of franchising is that it is designed to have the FRANCHISEE take all the risk while the FRANCHISOR can reduce its risk and if things go bad, then the FRANCHISOR can take the shop back over and find a new Fool and his money to fleece.
Unfortunately for him and YOU this is all perfectly legal in most States.
Forgot to mention: While the fool is operating his shop, the franchisor is sucking off all potential profit in the form of royalties, advertising fees, stock that must be purchased from the franchisor, uniforms, stock forms virtually anything the company can think of.
Now your typical franchisor will say That's not us it's the other guys There is a very effective method to determine if this is true or not. I am sure you will think of it all on your own.
After years of looking for an honest franchise I give up. None have proven to be the least bit honest and benefit the potential investor/owner they way they claim to. I challenge any of them to prove me wrong! The really big problem is that they have received tacit approval by the states in which they are registered especially states like California who require that certain documents be on file. That makes them look like legitimate investments when if fact they are not. Who the heck is in charge?
Back to BAI, your investment with them is a complete waste. You could farm names yourself with that money. You cannot sell your business as each transaction is stand alone therefore worth only a one-time deal, and BAI does not repurchase any businesses because they can sell licenses to as many people as they want. There is no exclusive territory.
In fact this lesson to all potential franchisees. Take that franchise fee money and do some due diligence, hire independent expert advisors, do research and advertising. Be sure you KNOW the business you want to start and that it is a fit for YOU. Listen to that little voice inside your head.
