My check was garnisheed by G. Reynolds Sims of Troy, Michigan through CACV of Colorado. When I contacted the original creditor, they stated the debt is only 2,500. They are currently suing me for 5,539.24. This is completely in excess of the debt. They have also taken out a judgement lien on my property in the amount of 5,800.

Sims has even engaged in a scheme to defraud his own clients out of their money, was caught and disciplined by the Attorney Discipline board as follows -

G. Reynolds Sims, P-23255, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, by Attorney Discipline Board Tri-County Hearing Panel #30.
Respondent was the president and sole shareholder of Great Lakes Equities, Co. (GLE), a licensed broker-dealer of securities. Respondent entered a plea of no contest to allegations that GLE engaged in a scheme to defraud its customers in connection with the offers to sell, purchases, and sales of common stock of three separate corporations, in violation of MCR ... 9.104(2)(4); Canon 1 of the then-applicable Code of Professional Responsibility, DR 1-102(A) (4); and Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct 8.4(a) and (c).
The parties stipulated that respondent be reprimanded.

Study EVERYTHING you were mailed or served with for errors and ommisions. Sims usually does not have very much hard evidence and uses bullying techniques to push people around. Once you find all the mistakes he has made (check response dates very carefully - he does not follow court procedures), haul him before a Judge who make make him explain his actions. You want to ask for sanctions, attorney fees, and ANY other charge you can hit him with. Likely, they got a default judgement against you for not showing up in court..but even more likely is that you were never actually served, but their crooked process service perjured him/herself by claiming you did. That is how junk debt buyers operate. If you had had proper notice, likely the case would have been dismissed for lack of proof..you did NOT have a contract with the Junk Debt Buyer/"Rent-a-Lawyer..they most likely did not have standing.
I would consult with an attorney and/or Clerk of Court to see if your state law allows a judgement to be "vacated" or set aside until both parties actually get PROPER notice to appear. You can do this in some states...I promise you, if that happens, they will NOT show up.
