-Celebrity interior designer Elaine Lewis author of LESS is MORE-A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO MAXIMIZING THE SPACE IN YOUR HOME; Elaine has completed homes for personalitiess suchas Jonh McEnroe, Sidney Poitier, The Rolling Stones,former Yankee pitcher Steve Karsay and Jeffrey Koo . In New Yorks Real Estate Community Elaine is called the Queen of Model apartments and has completed over three thousand model homes in NewYork City Luxury High Rises in the New York Metro area.The movers were adamant about receiving the sum of $5,050 which was contrary to their estimate of $3,848.36 given on July 20th 2010 (and the price of estimate not to exceed 15% of the price guarantee) Even smart people can be fooled by not reading the small print which was printed under the PRICE GUARANTEE suddenly the mover $5,050 prior to the shipment leaving their damaged LA Warehouse.
With the intevention of the DA of Los Angeles,DOT of Los Angeles and The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration intervened on behalf of Elaine Lewis. [continued below]....
.Deciding to move back to New York City from San Diego where on Thursday August 12th a cross country moving company CALIFORNIA-NEW YORK MOVERS packed her merchandise with a price guarantee and drove it to their warehouse in LA in preparation for the cross-country trip. Saturday August 14th a CEMENT TRUCK FELL THROUGH THE RAMP AND LANDED ON ELAINE'S CONTENTS. She was notified that all her belongings were destroyed by Cement and Diesel fuel. The contents of the truck included all her personal property, clothing, art work and and precious drawing of all her firms past and present interior design work were damaged. Having an empty apartment and having to move out of friends apartment she made a decison to purchase new furnishings and household goods for her New York Apartment after being advised that her belongings were damaged and she had to move into her new Manhattan Residence.The company a week later notifies that her possessions were safe and they are prepared to send them east.The Moving Van arrived at its Bronx Garage on September 13th and the Movers demanded payment of $5,050 before releasing the Van. Ms. Lewis who incurred over $10,820 in purchasing new furnishing with a Total cost for this move will be $15,870.
CONSUMER ISSUE WHO IS RESPONSBILE FOR THIS EXTRAORDINARY EXPENSE AND WHAT IS THE OBLIGATION OF THE FIRM THAT CONTRACTED TO MOVE HER HOUSEHOLD BELONGINGS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. WHOSE RESPONSIBILTY IS IT WHEN THE CUSTOMER IS THE VICTIM TO REIMBURSE THESE EXPENSES.
