A car sales company that should be reviewed by the Federal Trade Commisssion and the Attorney General for rippping off unsuspecting consumers. Not everyone has access to the Internet to check prices, but when a company attempts to give you $10,000 less than book value, there is a serious problem. Having sold cars before, if I could make a deal the way they attempted to deal with me, I would have to only sold 2 cars a month to make a living. They sell their cars at a reasonable price, if you are paying cash, but to trade cars, RUN don't walk to the nearest EXIT and go buy a new car at a new car dealership. My advice is to STAY AWAY from CarMax.

Kelley?

AUTHOR: Been There Done That - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, October 09, 2008

Whats Kelley got to do with this? Mark from Sterling...hmmm doesn't Carmax have an outlet there?

This is a very old post and alot of details are missing into this original post. Like year of car, type of vehicle?, when purchased, purchased new? Condition of car? And what "book value" is she referring to. I do admit that the disparity is huge but if she's dumping a Range Rover or an SUV there will be a huge drop.

But reply to Kelley statement...Carmax usues KBB to its advantage when appropriate to compare to the savings people receive as compared to KBB's value or if they are "out of book" they dont make that comparison (e.g. for a highly desirable or unique car).

Not sure why the "free" appraisal was raised has no bearing on this discussion at all. Like someone said if the value wasnt where they wanted it to be "vote with your feet". Its only a rip-off if you act on the deal.

How on earth could you hold compare an offer from one corporation to an offer from another corporation(who doesn't even purchase cars) on a legal basis? Kelley Blue Book is a private company who does not operate any car dealerships. Their numbers are a calculated by algorithms. Why don't you contact the Trade Commission and ask them to publish a list of used car values. On the day that happens, then you can go ahead and try to accuse someone of "ripping you off" by providing a FREE appraisal service.

You Should Know

AUTHOR: Karl - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, February 12, 2008

If you have sold cars in a dealership you should know that a dealer - at the least - will pay the same price (or less if he can get away with it) that he can purchase the same car for at auction. There are exceptions of course - i.e. a 5 year old car with 12,000 miles on it, a fantastically scarce truck, etc. People rely on the "Blue Book" or some other price guide and are extremely mad when the dealer offers thousands less. You and the other readers who got stiffed on a car deal have one basic option - WALK. Sell your car privately if you feel that it is worth $10,000 more than the trade in value, but regardless of price guides and personal hopes and prayers, a commodity is worth exactly what someone will pay for it. If you don't like the deal don't blame the dealer -just walk away.

ALL car dealers make more money when there is a trade-in. Add financing & they make more.

The salesman won't likely see any extra money.

It just sounds like CarMax is a little better at making extra money on a trade-in than are other dealers.....
