***** Do not fall for this scam. Even if you DO have a Verizon account in collections, I verified that Verizon DOES NOT USE CBCS TO COLLECT ON THEIR ACCOUNTS. ****
My advice if you actually do have a Verizon account that has gone to collections:
1) First call Verizon to verify they sent it to collections. They will verify this or not and provide you with a collection account number; and
2) The collection agency they use is Verizon Financial Services at 800-852-1922. They will not ask for your social, but the account # that you got in Step 1.

that I thought he had taken care of. Regardless of this..."
Hi! From your original post you make it seem that you never had an account. I understand where you're coming from, and I can tell you for a fact VZW uses CBCS to collect accounts. If you want I can send you a screen shot of my old work paper.
Moreover, you just said yourself, your ex had an account with your ex. Who knows he may have created another account?
"1) The amount Verizon disclosed was NOT the amount that CBCS told me. In fact, the amount CBCS told me was way higher."
That's why I'm thinking it's another account. Do the VZW account numbers match? Service phone numbers?
"2) The verizon rep told me they do NOT use CBCS, told me who they DID use, and provided me with an account # and phone number to whom they do use, and when I called, the amount and everything else matched."
Okay for the one account they're not using CBCS, for the other account? Also, you're in your rights to write a dispute letter requesting verification via CMRRR. It pretty much clears up all the issues you have--they have to stop collections and get the verification from VZW.
"Sorry, but your one little reply against over 300 complaints about CBCS means NOTHING."
I would recommend putting other collection agencies in the internet, you'll find tons of complaints.

They should be able to give you the account information. You listed warnings regarding them. They verify information to confirm if it's the correct consumer so they don't go over information with an outside party.
As a former worker with Verizon, both the landline side and cell phone side use CBCS as a collection company. I would suggest giving your full SSN to verify with Verizon (landline or cell) to verify if you have an account in collection.
If you don't believe it's your account, you can send them a dispute letter to request validation. You can send it via CMRRR.
