I made it all the way through the verification phase with no major problems. Then the system asked me to input my social security number. I immediately hung up the phone and wrote them a letter.
The only time any company needs a person's social security number is during the application process. Social security numbers are used mainly to run credit checks.
Even a potential employer does not need your social security number until you are actually hired, that's why I don't put mine on a job application either.
