What about all the breeders that are blatently misrepresenting the cats they are selling. ie: sold as SHOW quality for $1500 up that have, Low Noses, BAD BITES, hernias, etc. (Not everything can be properly evaulated by a picture. And some people know how to take deceiving pictures.)
Selling cats as PKD negative because you have a PKD scan from some point that is negative but KNOW that the cat is now positive or falsifying PKD test results. Selling cats as breeders and then not standing behind it when it refuses to breed after 4 years!!
Or the breeding "stating" she'll replace the cat when she has something - and years go by and she repeatedly says she has nothing. [continued below]....
Come on ladies it happens all the time. Heck I've had it done to me on SEVERAL occasions - by some of the top breeders out there. And its done repeatedly to newbies. It seems, in my experience anyway - the more I've paid for the cat - the more problems the cat has had.
With a few exceptions. I've developed friendships and communications with some breeders that I would praise to the heavens and I have. I've purchased their cats (just by communication on the internet and the phone) and the cats are WONDERFUL - everything they've said they were and more. There are others out there however whose ethics need to be re-evaluated.
They'd better have a supply of ice cubes on hand when it's their time - they're going to need them.
Some of you will say there are legal recourses. Yes - there are - but you have to go to the place where the sale originated and find a lawyer there who will stand up for you - OR send your lawyer there (watch THOSE fees add up). And in the end - the lawyer keeps a third to half of what you get back. And have you ever tried to find a lawyer and explain the issue is regarding a cat you bought. How many of you have gotten further than that?
Yes you can go to see the cat in person. Most times though a breeder will want a non-refundable deposit to hold the kitten until you are able to fly to see it. I don't know about you - but
#1 I work and so I'd have to take time off to fly around the country to SEE the cat -
#2 Airline fees are starting to cost quite a lot #3 Once you've seen the cat and decide you like it and want to take it back with you, you've got to get a health certificate to TAKE it back with you and most likely that will add another day or two to your adventure (add up those motel bills, not to mention the rental car, food ....)
And if you don't like the cat - then you're out the deposit, the airline fee, the hotel, the rental car - When if you could have JUST TRUSTED the breeder to begin with ....... And if you DO like the cat you still have the issue of whether the contract will be upheld. What if the cat doesn't breed or if it dies of something congenital you CAN't see - for instance - myocardiopathy (sp?) All the flights to check it out won't tell you that one.
My point being - you spent two weeks discussing the "horrors" of ringworm. At least that can be treated and eliminated - albeit a nuisance - at least it's treatable. What about the other things going on out there?
I've thought and thought about writing this and I finally decided it had to be said.
