Mea culpa, I said I was going to close my Charter One Accounts, but I didn't learn my lesson from prior bad problems with them, so I have no one but myself to blame for this latest nightmare, but hey, maybe if I note my experience, again, others will learn from my mistake.

This morning I checked my account and found it overdrawn to the tune of 22 bucks. I thought, how is this?  All my stuff is accounted for, and I have 7 bucks left, where did I mess up?  I checked and found a service charge, totally unexpected, and so I called, found out it was for 'over draft protection', which is an annual fee of 30 bucks to transfer money from my savings account to my checking account.  Now, I will say that in and of itself is a rip off.  Why would you charge someone a fee for a piece of code that links two accounts together?  I write software for a living, it doesn't take much coding effort to do this, and yet Charter One thinks this is worth 30 bucks a year!!!  Unreal.  I call the bank and the manager on duty put the 30 bucks back and unlinks the accounts and apologizes for the misunderstanding.

Fast forward 4 hours and my account is now 70 bucks overdrawn?  HUH????   I call back and get a stupid piece of garbage manager named GREG who gives me this self-righteous speech about paying for my mistakes.  Say freaking WHAT?  You shouldn't have taken my 30 bucks!  And you know that and put it back and now you want to hit me for overdraft fees for a service charge you put back???

I told him I was going to file a ripoff report against him and Charter One, and I was going to close my account and email bomb every charter one and citizens bank executive I could find, but he didn't care and wouldn't put my money back.  The piece of crap little punk wouldn't budge.

Here's my problem with this.  I had no idea that there was a fee for this 'over draft protection' with my own money in the first place!  Not explained to me at all, or I wouldn't have signed up for it, I am too poor for that crap.  Nor did i know it was 'increased', crap I didn't know it even existed.  He gave me more garbage about how we sent you a notice, blah blah blah.  I don't do anything via paper, my stuff is all internet, and the last notice I got from Charter One was a threat that they were going to switch my savings account to a non-interest bearing account because I was using it too much.  I can't stand banks that just blithely help themselves to your money because it is in their bank.  That's why banks are going under.  They can't figure anything out anymore, and they pass the costs on to the small person.

So God only knows how much I am going to be overdrawn tomorrow, it will be bad no doubt, I had just enough money in there for the transactions coming in with 7 bucks to spare.  NOTE - there was enough to cover what was coming in, but not to cover this mystery suprise charge.

Greg, it is my sincere hope that charter one demotes or fires you after this.  I intend to encourage all my co-workers, family members, friends, and anyone else I can to take their business to NCB or to a credit union.

Okay I understand better now..

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (U.S.A.)

Yeah these banks are heartless thieves. I was just watching the news how an executive from Wells Fargo has been living it up in a foreclosed property (which was foreclosed to do the original owners losing their money in a well publicized ponzy scheme)..12 million dollar home in Malibu CA..partying it up...I am sure the stockholders are thrilled with this..but it is nothing compared to the hardship they have caused people like yourself..it is inexcusable and cruel...and correct..they do not care at ALL.

The problem I think you had happen is 2 fold. One is an unexpected bank fee..which is one of many things that can cause an overdraft that even the most accurate hand written register on the planet could not forsee..and..that the bank has manipulated transactions..the sequence, order and TIME..so they can fleece ADDITIONAL fees from you. Many banks are doing this and it is so wrong. I know of no other business or institution that can alter time in order to gain profit..but somehow some banks have been pulling it off. Use the search box above in the top right corner and put in the names of popular banks..Wachovia, BofA etc..and read some of the reports...info there as well if you are interested in possibly doing something about it..as well as some entertaining and dynamic rebuttal and debates.

What I still do not understand is that you were charged a fee to link the accounts..so why did they charge an overdraft?..if you were charged a fee to link the accounts..you already paid for the service to protect from overdrafts..but oh well..either way I do believe you were ripped off unjustly. The reason your credit union has better policies is because they are not as near as much of  a ripoff as some banks..and I think as more people catch on..they will realize they have other options that can work out better for them.

I will be glad to watch the youtubes..keep us posted when they are ready to view and how to get to them.

Clarification

AUTHOR: Mikezane - (U.S.A.)

To Clarify -

1.  I was charge a service fee for linking my accounts together, which is what Charter One calls 'over draft protection'.  I did not opt to take loan overdraft protection, it costs money.  I (stupid me) was under the impression that linking my accounts was free.  My credit union does it for free, and only charges you a fee if you go over 3 auto transfers in a 30 day period.

2.  I did not know about the fee, so I called to complain and had the fee reversed.  Keep in mind that I DID tell them it was okay to link the accounts, but I was never told there were any fees, so I obviously did not know when they were going to hit my account.  The bank just charged me the fees, surprise, and it caused my account to go negative.  Had the fee NOT be charged, I would NOT have been negative.  I would have only had a 7 dollar balance, but the important thing is I wouldn't have been negative.

3.  The 2 hours my account showed negative cause 2 overdraft charges to be posted to my account.

4.  When I called the bank to complain again, they refused to refund the NSF fees, although they HAD put back the fee that caused it.

5.  The manager Greg was the most self-righteous pompous JERK I have ever had the displeasure to deal with IN MY LIFE.

6.  I am going to be posting some funny videos describing my experiences with Charter One over the past few years.  They will be available. on YouTube.  Hoping for a positive response.

Hope this answers your questions.  I am a single parent, I live paycheck to paycheck, and currently my balance is minus 300 bucks because I had a bunch of little transactions coming in.  They DON'T care at all except for the money.

Not sure if I fully understand..

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (U.S.A.)

This seems ironic almost to the point of being humorous..although I feel bad that you lost any funds...

But are you saying a fee that was supposed to protect you from overdrafting..CAUSED the overdraft and the bank did not cover it?

Now most accounts automatically come with a type of overdraft protection that is "free"..but you will be charged a fee for all overdrafts the banks covers within the limits (regardless of what some may say..not all banks are the same or charge the same fees, you must read your banks literature to determine)...and some banks off a "transfer" overdraft service which it what you seem to be charged for.

With my current bank it works as such...if I am "enrolled" in the overdraft transfer protection..any overdraft will cost me a moderate fee ($12.00) if my account has $10,000 or less..and free overdraft coverage if my account is $10,000 or greater.

What does it state in the literature that the coverage was supposed to protect you from if the bank is charging all these fees? I am curious.
