I never received a registration renewal in the mail. I should have noticed it expired, but honestly, it's impossible to get anyone on the phone at the DMV in Sacramento. You have to take time out of the work day in order to talk to a person.

So, I didn't hear anything about my registration being late until I received a late notice from the DMV, complete with a nice fat penalty that amounted to three times the usual registration amount. I was very upset about this and decided to pay the exorbitant fee to avoid getting a ticket.

Then, I told a co-worker about my situation and they told me the same thing happened to them! Not only that, we have only 10 employees at our company and THREE of them (including me) have had this happen.

I believe the California DMV is doing this on purpose to generate more money in the form of late registration fees and I'm going to look into a way to report it.

Interesting..

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

I have had more than a few cars registered in CA over the years and can not remember a single time I didn't receive a renewal. A couple of possibilities are that you did not update your address with the DMV so you could not get it. The second is that since they do send them very far in advance, it is possible that you received it, and misplaced the renewal.

But even if it is misplaced the Month and Year your registration expires is right ON your licence plate. So at the very least you would notice it at some point that the date is coming up or has passed.

In Arizona....

Don't know if this helps or saves you time, but I do know here in Arizona, sending out a vehicle renewal registration notice is considered just a courtesy reminder. They are not required to sends out the notices, they do it as a courtesy. I was told this when I let my tags expire and had to go into the DMV to renew (and pay the penalties).

You are probably even lucky they sent out the past due notice and you were'nt stopped for having expired plates and had a ticket to deal with also.

It's similiar to credit cards bills, if you don't get the statement in the mail, which reminds you its due, and you miss your payment, you cannot get out of the payment or late fees and penalties just because you didn't get the bill. In the end, it is our responsibility to know when, how much and what is due.

In Arizona we are lucky, the DMV has a web-site set up for things like renewals that makes it fast and easy to renew.

Hope this helps. No matter what, good luck to you though. (and no, I do not work for the government :o) )
