So, I didn't hear anything about my registration being late until I received a late notice from the DMV, complete with a nice fat penalty that amounted to three times the usual registration amount. I was very upset about this and decided to pay the exorbitant fee to avoid getting a ticket.
Then, I told a co-worker about my situation and they told me the same thing happened to them! Not only that, we have only 10 employees at our company and THREE of them (including me) have had this happen.
I believe the California DMV is doing this on purpose to generate more money in the form of late registration fees and I'm going to look into a way to report it.

POSTED: Thursday, April 30, 2009But even if it is misplaced the Month and Year your registration expires is right ON your licence plate. So at the very least you would notice it at some point that the date is coming up or has passed.

POSTED: Thursday, April 30, 2009You are probably even lucky they sent out the past due notice and you were'nt stopped for having expired plates and had a ticket to deal with also.
It's similiar to credit cards bills, if you don't get the statement in the mail, which reminds you its due, and you miss your payment, you cannot get out of the payment or late fees and penalties just because you didn't get the bill. In the end, it is our responsibility to know when, how much and what is due.
In Arizona we are lucky, the DMV has a web-site set up for things like renewals that makes it fast and easy to renew.
Hope this helps. No matter what, good luck to you though. (and no, I do not work for the government :o) )
