I bought a BMW M3 from car carmax. they said they did the 110 point inspection. It was really a 10 point inspection. my clutch started to slip after I bought the car, and I have had many cars that were stick shift. I was not riding the clutch. I got the car from the carmax in FL, I thought I got a deal but I really got a piece of junk. Every week something goes bad. This Monday I have to get a new ABS computer because my old one broke. Not to mention that my steering wheel is deteriorating it must be from all that hot weather in FL. A new one is about $700 at the dealer ship. Luckily for me that my cousin lives in Germany I will get him to ship one over for a cheaper price.

My leather seats are wearing relay fast, and I am redoing them. also my steering wheel is making strand noise. I could go on all night about problems I have had. I guess the owner of the car sold it right when he knew the car was about to fall apart.

My electrical system is messed up and everything looks like it is going down hill from here. I tell everyone to be careful about a used car. you know what you have when you spend the extra money on a new car, but you never know what you have when you get a used car.

This is my first and last time I buy a car from carmax. Don't be dumb like I was and fall for a good deal. You pay for what you get. I should have listened to my friends that got a car from carmax, they warned me but I didn't listen, and know I hope you don't do what I did.

Take my advice and be smart and careful about any used car you buy. They took me for a real ride.

Leather... Professionalism...

AUTHOR: Fritz - (U.S.A.)

To the leather guy/gal: did you not inspect the car end to end? Did you not sit in the car and note whether it leather or not? Did BMW sell 3 version such as cloth, pleather (fake leather), and real leather? I assume you got pleather instead of leather? Were the seats recovered before you bought the car?

Or are we splitting hairs? CarMax ID'd the seats as leather and BMW doesn't supply real leather on this car so you are trying to leverage CarMax into having the seats recovered? Buyer's remorse?

You should have researched your purchase more before you plunked the money down on the table.

Should buy it from a BMW dealer

AUTHOR: Michael - (U.S.A.)

Why would you buy a M3 from CarMax? That is crazy. You are buying an expensive high performance car from a discount outlet.

If you bought it from a BMW dealer you would have a certified vehicle that they would stand behind. Plus you would have the great customer service that most BMW dealers provide. Whenever I brought my BMW into service I got a free loaner and received top notch service.

Car Max is good for selling your old cars too and that is about it.

CARMAX Fraudulent Practices

AUTHOR: Mike - (U.S.A.)

I purchased a 2001 BMW from CarMax. I have never purchased a BMW before but have wanted one for some time. The car I purchased clearly stated that it had leather seats. Many times (including during initial correction of problems) the seats were referred to as leather. I called BMW for care instruction and much to my surprise learned that the seats were not leather.

I made CarMax aware of this problem and the initital response was "you bought" it. Additionally, this car has been with CarMax almost three weeks now with never the offer for a loaner vehicle. I finally had to request a loaner 3 weeks into the service period because I have no vehicle and I have to work to support my family. I have made the monthly payment and driven this vehicle for maybe 5 days in a one month period. My customer service experience has been one of great disappointment.

I am now being forced to purchase another BMW at a higher price because I have found nothing comprable to my originally selected vehicle. I may have to pursue legal channels to have this problem resolved. This is a clear case of fraud. I have offered to return the car for a full refund or have CarMax give me a vehicle of equal condition regardless of additional cost.

I have been a CarMax customer for many years and have told dozens of people about my great experiences. I have been ripped off and will probably never by a vehicle from them again.

I have also made the CarMax management team aware that other cars sans-leather are being advertised as having leather when they do not and their answer has been, "it's the same thing" to which I have replied, "show me the animal it came from!"

Car Lots are all the same! They are all company's out to make money! Sure their commercials like to portray their sales associates as our"friends" that are here to help us but in the end they stick it to you the best that they can! The name of the game is profit!! The best we can do is walk in knowing this. I suggest that in the future you have your own mechanic inspect any used vehicle you consider purchasing.

CarMax not Perfect but........

AUTHOR: Brian - (U.S.A.)

I bought a used 1998 Volvo S70 from CarMax. My Volvo guy saw the oil leak but thought it was a minor, fixable item. CarMax fixed it but my guy found the oil again a few days later.

The Volvo dealer CarMax sent it to found a major problem e.g. need for replacement engine. I wanted to "kill" the deal but a lower-level manager at CarMax said "no way"..they would provide a remanufactured engine (this is 15 days after I bought the car).

I said ok if the Volvo dealer installed the engine. CarMax said "no way"....they had competent mechanics (trained by Volvo?). I sent an e-mail to the CarMax Corporate office and to the General Manager of the Dealership where I bought the car.

They said "way" much to the chagrin of the previous-mentioned lower-level manager. CarMax negated the deal and told me they did not want me to go away unhappy. They shipped another car from 1200 miles away for me to look at.

It was a good buy...and CarMax charged me $100 for shipping then put me in a focus group where they paid me $100 to eat cookies and complain about how they initially treated me.

Not shoddy treatment.... better than the previous new cars I bought. To be honest I would have picketted CarMax every Sat/Sunday if the issue had not been resolved but it never even got to that verbally. I recommend CarMax to folks provided they have a good technician or mechanic who will help CarMax maintain their "Corporate honesty".

CARMAX IS THE ONLY DEALER I WILL GO TO

AUTHOR: Eric - ()

I Bought a 1998 ford explorer on july of 2001 from the clearwater florida location. now to start off with this was in the middle of the ford/firestone tire problems... carmax was straight up with everything about the car. the car came with brandnew tires for obvious reasons. i paid a great price around 16,000 for the fully loaded v-8 truck. now i have it a year i have put on about 20000 mile and i do drive hard the only problem i have experienced so far was a air-intake valve that went bad about 4 months ago i went there and within 2 hours they had a new one delivered from a ford dealer and replaced cost me 25 dollars. as far as im concerned they stay true to there word... last thing about 5 months after i bought my suv and the tire controversery died down i went to carmax to get an oil change and i was looking around on the lot and i noticed that the same truck as mine had oppriciated in value which is very rare anyway thank you carmax

CARMAX HAS GOOD BUSSINESS PRACTICES

AUTHOR: TRACY - ()

I bought a 1998 Ford Ranger from CARMAX in Orlando. When I bought the truck I understood that there was a 5 day return policy and that there was a 30 day bumper to bumper warrany offered to me from Carmax.

An optional warranty was offered to me also & was explained to me very well by Patty K. the sales accociate.

After taking the truck home & driving it for a week I made an appt. to take the truck back in for some minor issues, witch they were more than willing to resolve(I'm a very picky person).

I expressed a concern to Shaun, the service manager, about a vibration that was unsettling to me. He offered to take the truck over to the local Ford dealer for their inspection, at the expense of Carmax mind you, and put me in a free loaner car.

As it turns out, the truck has an issue that makes the truck not meet Carmax standards. So Carmax is returning 100% of money/financing that I spent on the truck towards another vehicle. So all of this to say that I am impressed with the way that they do bussiness becauce it seems to me that they really wanted to take care of any concern that I had, even to the extent of buying back this truck fully, whereas most other dealers would give you the runaround.

As far as the BMW "ripoff" I DON'T THINK SO. Nobody can predict what can happen to a car next week or next month, thats why we have something called a WARRANTY.

CARMAX DID OK BY US

AUTHOR: Suzanne - ()

We purchased a BMW at the Irving Texas location of CARMAX. We purchased an extended warranty, but we also took the time to go over the car carefully within 2 days of bringing the car home.

We discovered some items that required attention, reported them to CARMAX in Irving and met with the manager. We brought a list of items requiring attention to the meeting and explained what our expectations were to get the car fixed.

We left the car at CARMAX and asked them to check out the items on the list. The car was there for about 5 hours, when we received a call back. CARMAX agreed on the items requested to be fixed.

The manager immediately provided a loaner car to us at no cost and arranged for our BMW to be serviced by a BMW dealer known for their excellent service. I don't know if a regular car dealership would act that quickly for a new car, let alone a BMW that is 5 years old.

At CARMAX, you are buying a used vehicle. Some are gently used, some not. As a buyer of a used vehicle, you should take the time to really listen to the car, check it out and don't fall in love with the looks. Buy the extended warranty, but also pay attention to the small print in the 30 day initial warranty. We had about $2500 worth of work done by a BMW dealership for NOTHING. We got this car at a great interest rate, price and NO DOWN PAYMENT.

Our BMW is out of the shop and humming along nicely. If we have any future problems, I can rest assured the Irving team will handle the problem. We got a heck of a deal on the car and really good service at the Irving CARMAX and at the BMW dealership.

Our situation was handled professionally and to our satisfaction. I think selling used cars is akin to walking in a mine field. Some cars are going to be great, others, lemons....... I don't think CARMAX wants to sell you a lemon on purpose. I jsut wanted to put a positive comment out here so people can see that not all CARMAX dealerships are the same.

CarMax tried to sell you a warranty genius

AUTHOR: B - ()

I have purchased two cars from CarMax. They were very upfront in telling me that cars are machines and machines break. I think they sincerely try to put the best cars available out on the lot. But I do know that they have a warranty that covers EVERY SINGLE item you've complained about (with the exception of your seats). By the way, leather, florida, HELLOOOO????

So why didn't you purchase the extended warranty? My guess is that, in the hopes of a flashy image, you bought a used, probably high mile BMW that stretched your budget beyond its limits. Grow up man.

BMW's are not known as the most reliable vehicles to own .. or the cheapest.

Rebuttal:

The problems that are listed here are typical of a BMW not of a bad car dealer. BMW's are not known as the most reliable vehicles to own .. or the cheapest.

Also, if your clutch started slipping immediately then you should have taken advantage of the 5 day return period or the 30 day warranty. However, I'm sure if they had looked at the tires and saw that they had no more tread on them you would've had a problem getting your clutch fixed.

And remember, Carmax doesn't build the cars they sell. Maybe you should file a Rip-Off Report on BMW ... they manufactured the car. Carmax offers you a 5 day return period, a warranty, an extended warranty, and a guarantee against any frame damage or salvage history .. what else do you expect a used car dealer to do?

Let me get this correct. You purchased a Euro-car in Florida and did'nt foresee having problems with it? Remember, BMW builds vehicles for European climates to withstand tempatures well below what we here in Florida will ever see. The extreme heat we deal with destroys anything involving friction (ie clutches, brakes, tires, belts...)and not to saw the least of the euro trash electrical systems found on these cars.

Maybe they are ok in the northern states, but the only reason people buy them down here is for status. As for leather in Florida, well now that's just plain dumb unless you only drive at night.
