I had gotten behind on credit card bills after having surgery. I contacted Careone credit and set up a payment plan. They said they would set up payment plans with creditors, stop or lower interest rates and protect from garnishments. After paying them for almost a year, I was further behind in the credit cards to the point that it was impossible to catch up. I was having my wages garnished, which they had stated they would be able to prevent. All they did to help with the garnishment is write a letter which I was to take to court. It was useless. I stopped my payments with Careone and was "reimbursed" about $50.00. None of my debts had been paid and they only set up an arrangement with one company who did lower rates a small amount. They took their "fees" from each payment, paid very few if any creditors and that was all. They abviously can pay BBB the "fee" to get an A rating, because they didn't earn it. BIG RIPOFF!

Then they are all rip-offs. I've been told they are owned by credit card companies/banks. They are no help at all. Seem to be out for themselves, not to help others.

All the debt settlement companies work the same way

These debt settlement companies are terrible. All they do is take your funds and put your funds into their pocket rather than paying the creditor. The way their plan is designed, they tell you that they will renegotiate your payments to each of your creditors so you have a reduced payment.
However, what they don't tell you is that they only have a contract to negotiate with limited number of creditors. In your case, it was one creditor in others it might be two or three, but it is never all of the creditors. As you found out, they can not stop your creditors for suing you and obtaining judgments and then garnishing your wages.
You are better off negotiating with your own creditors because they have the power to change the payments. You have to speak to the hardship department, all the creditors have one, in order to get your payments changed. Don't use a third party to negotiate your deal. The third party ends up with the $$ and you end up in much worse shape with judgments and liens etc. Take your life back.
