We adopted a puppy from Chrystll Owens at Caring Canine Animal Rescue (or Clay County Animal Rescue) after seeing a link on petfinder.com. She assured us that the mother was rescued while pregnant and that she had already found a home for the father. She also assured us that the puppy would have first vaccines and wormer when we picked him up.

We picked him up in 8/16/13 in the morning. He seemed okay--maybe a little lethargic but nothing alarming. However, as the day went on we couldn't get him to eat anything. We emailed her and she said that he was probably feeling a bit scared being away from his mom/littermates. However, we were concerned enough that we set up an appointment with our vet for the next day.

By Saturday he still hadn't eaten anything and was still acting a bit lethargic. The vet didn't do a parvo test since we showed her the documents showing he had just had his vaccinations the day before. [continued below]....

..... However, by Saturday afternoon he was puking and had mucus in his poop. And by 3:00 a.m. Sunday, we were rushing him to an animal hospital because he was pooping blood.

The vet at the animal hospital did a parvo test and it was positive. She said the fecal sample we brought in was blood and sloughed off intestinal tract. By that point, the parvo was advanced enough that the vet said given his size and age, survival with treatment was likely less than 25%. We made the decision to euthanize him. We called Chrystll to make sure she treated her animals and let all other adopters know ASAP. She acted shocked and said that maybe it was a "false positive" test. Given that he hadn't eaten in two days, was puking, pooping blood, and had intestinal tract in his poop, that is a fairly ridiculous response.

Today we made contact with another person who adopted from the same litter. We discovered that 1. her puppy was picked up the same day as ours and she had also had to euthanize him. 2. a puppy picked up earlier than 8/16 had died on the day we picked up our dogs 3. a fourth adopted puppy is currently being treated for parvo and isn't in good shape 4. Chrystll was aware on 8/16 that at least one puppy had died from parvo and didn't let anyone know.

This woman sent us home with a puppy that she knew was going to die. She knew we had another dog in the home (luckily up on all vaccinations) and she knew that we had two young kids who had already fallen in love with the puppy.

We also discovered that 1. these puppies aren't rescues. In fact, Chrystll owns the mother and bred her to sell (the $250 "adoption" fee) the puppies 2. She never took them to a vet. She claims to have administered the shots and wormer herself.

She claims to be a no-kill shelter, but she is knowingly sending sick dogs home with people while smiling and accepting "adoption fees" and "donations". And, worst of all, we just discovered that the fifth puppy in this litter has just been posted by her on petfinder.com. She knows that three of the five puppies in the litter have died of parvo they got in her care, and she is still trying to make a buck on the last puppy.

And this site is for what

AUTHOR: chrystll owens - ()

This is what this site says  in their information  part

Consumers, just because a company or individual is reported on Rip-off Report does not necessarily mean you should not do business with them. In many cases, it’s just the opposite. Just because a company is posted on Rip-off Report does not mean they are "bad". At some point in time, everyone has felt like they've been ripped off, when that may not have been the case. Not everything published on the Internet, or local newspapers, or local TV news is always true. Many stories, no matter where you see them, may have a bias slant. Being short on space or only having less than 2 minutes to do a story where important facts are left out can change the entire story. Rip-off Report feels consumers reading the unedited experiences of other consumers, without editorial involvement, are getting the best consumer opinion/news available. Our detractors would like to tell you differently. Savvy consumers need to take in all the information they can find and use it as an advantage. Consumers who investigate and obtain information about a company from a number of sources will be able to make more educated decisions, because they know what to watch for. By reading Rip-off Report, or any other publication containing information about businesses, you, the consumer, now know more about that business than its competitors. More than likely the competitor has the same issues. Let the reported business know you’ve read complaints about them, that you would like to do business with them, and get affirmation from the company that if you do business with them, they will do right by you. Let them know that if they treat you right, you will log on to Rip-off Report and tell the world what a great experience you’ve had. All companies make mistakes. It is the ones that learn from their mistakes that will benefit the consumers the most. "An educated consumer is our best reader"

To be clear , BETH

AUTHOR: chrystll owens - ()

Lets get some thing perfectly clear Z got her refund b/c i ok it though my bank  and it does not matter if i have the tails docked or not . People can read this and only see what you want to write and it is  a people that is unhappy about what happen and i understand that i told your husband the refund would come within 30 days and all this is doing is letting you blow off steam which is ok unload it, and from here forward there will not be anymore comments and no more emails from you or your husband. B/c i can see you are out just to get back at me and smear my name on the net which it is water of a ducks back. As for Becki she also will be refunded as i told her 30 days from the time i got her email was 8/20 so 9/20 she will be refunded , You think b/c you put me on here and commenting and calling the state vet and throwing his name around will bully me into giving to your money back faster well i am sorry it will not happen any faster then the 30 days i said . My rules 8/18 is when chad email me and 9/18 will be when you get yours . If this post is still up by the 9/18  and all of this has not stopped i will have no choice but to get my lawyer involved with harrassment and personal  slander charges  and that is what this is only b/c you have put my personal information and address up on the internet and have done nothing but harrased me sense 8/20 when i told you i would refund, And by rights when you sign a contract and it states NO REFUNDS i really do not have to refund you anything but only by good faith will i refund but you are pushing me to fall back on contract and states NO REFUNDS  like i said i dont have to refund you anything. As the state vet said he cant not do anything about my contract or my rules or my policies. Only to make sure the animals are taken care of and check out things, and all my animals are in good health and all have shots and or good and healthy i have had no problems here with sick animals in the past or now. And i did not mean to say false poss test just said maybe they was wrong as some tests can be. so i am done.

Refund

AUTHOR: Beth - ()

I did not say "keep the refund". I said that you were refusing it and that if you wouldn't give it back that I could at least take a little solace in the fact that people can now see consumer comments on how you are running your "rescue". And my vet isn't the one who tested the puppy. Because my vet isn't open at 3:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning. We rushed that puppy to an animal hospital 20 miles away in the middle of the night because we were so concerned. And he didn't just "test positive". He was puking, pooping blood, and we had been syringe-feeding him because he wouldn't eat. So please, with all of your education and training (oh wait, you have none and aren't a vet), please tell me AGAIN that you think this was a false-positive test. And I suppose Zed's test was also false-positive. And Becki's (whose dog also got so sick he had to be euthanized). And all the while you knew a littermate had tested positive for parvo and just kept that nugget to yourself, even after we contacted you twice because we were concerned. And I also know about how Zed got her deposit back. You didn't "give it back" to her. She was able to get it refunded via the online pay site because she let them know about the situation.

And let's just be clear about one thing--if you really were concerned about the life of the puppy and whether or not he would receive the correct treatment, the second you found out about Zed's puppy's diagnosis you would have alerted us and even offered to take the puppy back so you could, as you claim you wanted to do, treat him yourself. Instead, you didn't say anything to us and played dumb when we contacted you about his lack of appetite and lethargy.

Also, what kind of "rescue" docks a dog's tail? It is an unnecessary, elective procedure that people who are adopting a mutt could care less about.

Again, please keep posting rebuttals. Each one just makes clear to anyone who reads this who and what you are. You are ruining your own business by posting these rebuttals. So thank you!

refund

AUTHOR: chrystll owens - ()

you just said this in Black and white (Just keep the $ 250 adoption fee) did you not, And the Vet paper is not from your Vet in Indy it is from a vet in fishers that is not on your paperwork . I need a vet record from the your vet that was on your paperwork when you adopted the puppy , And yes i know the Vet i talked to about refunding the fees from he will also be getting your comment on here where you say to keep the refund, also only 2 are left to recieve the refund Z got hers already and becki is next. And the puppy did not stay with mom she would not let him nurse anymore and b/c of the parvo test i kept him put up away from everyone so the mother milk had nothing to do with it and at the vets visit today and another test the pup was NEG from parvo with no treatment of parvo just b/c there is a poss test does not always mean it is so, i am glad Z is a vet tech but as i said not all tests are right there are tests that test wrong and i believe that if the 2 pups would have been treated or atleast brought back they would still be here today and not just PTS .

Vet Letter & Fee Refund

AUTHOR: Beth - ()

Chrystll, I'm tired of going back and forth with you about this. It is like debating a child. We did take our puppy to the vet the day after we picked him from you. A parvo test wasn't done at that time because you DID NOT TELL US that the puppy had been exposed to parvo EVEN THOUGH YOU KNEW IT. By the time we rushed our puppy to an animal hospital at 3:00 Sunday, the vet assured us that he was so far gone that recovery was not likely--less than 25% chance. In addition, the likely reason the puppy that is with you is still alive is because it was able to continue to get antibodies from the mother's breastmilk. We were told by you that the puppy would be ready for pick-up in early August at 6 weeks of age. We then asked if we could push it back to mid-August because our vet said puppies should really stay with the mother until 8 weeks. Well, the paperwork you gave us on August 16 indicated that the puppy was 6 weeks old at pickup, not 8. Yet another bit of misinformation from you. Also, the reason Zed's puppy is still alive is because she is a vet tech who recognized the sypmtoms of parvo on the very day she picked him up. She also could tell you were not being honest with her. We aren't vet techs, and we trusted you to be upfront with us. Live and learn.

You told my husband that you would refund the $250 adoption fee once we provided you with a letter from the vet. We now have it and will be emailing it to you (and cc'ing the Board of Animal Health contact--you know, the one you told you would be refunding ALL adopters' fees.) ASAP. We expect our deposit to be refunded. That $250 doesn't begin to put a dent in the amount of money we spent on care and eventually euthanizing our puppy, the emotional toll it took on us and our two kids, OR the stress of worrying if our 12 year old dog might get sick from being exposed to the parvo. And, honestly, keep posting as many rebuttals as you like. Your responses don't indiciate any lack of guilt and simply show that you do not care about the animals in your care. Or at least not after the $250 is in your pocket, anyway. I'm done going back and forth with you. It's not worth my energy.

Treatment

AUTHOR: chrystll owens - ()

Beth you did nothing for the pup but put it down did not even try to save it just b/c a test showed poss does not mean anything. parvo is very treatable. it is very ODD. the pup i still have tested poss for it to but is still here and if you would have called when you was at the vets office and told me i would have had you bring the pup back and i would have treated him and he would still be alive. but instead you put him to sleep without treatment of any kind . so i dont want to hear about how i dont care for the animals b/c i would have treated him and not have put him to sleep just b/c it was a poss test . it is odd that 2 of the pups from this liter 1 is still alive here and zed's is alive and she had him treated and b/c you just put the pup to sleep he DIED from being put to sleep not from parvo . Puppies get everything and they are treatable if you put the efford in it and you did not you just put him to sleep without treatment without calling me to see if i wanted the pup back and i would have taken him back and he would be alive today b/c i would have done what needed to be done and not just killed him. We can go back and fourth all day here.

Lied

AUTHOR: Beth - ()

What you have not and cannot deny is that you were informed on Friday that Zed's puppy had tested positive for parvo. We emailed you Friday night to say our puppy wasn't eating. Your response--to say he might not eat for a couple days. No mention of parvo exposure. We emailed again to say he seemed lethargic. Again, your response said nothing about parvo. Just that he was fine when with you. And you sent another puppy home with Becki Saturday without mentioning parvo to her.

Had you not known, I wouldn't question your concern for animals. But you did know and said nothing. Just kept your $250 "adoption" fee. Had you told us, we could have sought treatment before it was too late. But you chose to keep that information to yourself for fear of losing that $250. I think that says all that needs to be said about your concern for animals.

There is no state law by no one saying a rescue has to vet an animal it is our choice to do so and by state law i am not allowed to give rabies shots but i can give puppy shots and worm them all i want . i did tell you what makes them rescues THEY WAS OS = OWNER SURRENDERS they was turned over to us to the rescue there fore they are rescues. And Designer Dogs or MUTTS . And it is no more cruel for a vet to cut off a dogs tail then a common person out in the real world what makes them diff what b/c they went to school?

I am sorry but the pup i still have her the last of the liter and the Runt at that was tested and did pop slight pos for parvo but you know what NO signs NO runny poop no thorwing up no NOTHING he was giving just twice a day meds by mouth no extra help he still to this day eating and drinking and playing just as normal as he was when he was 6 wks old now that he is 8.5 wks old 2 wks after tested still good to go so i wonder what does that say about the testing ?

hum they are no always right dont care about what you are anyone else says i know what ii see in the pup and there is nothing. No instead of talking about me here why dont you just email me you have it . I will still run my rescue as i see fit with no problems ., stalk me as you must but i will still being helping and saving animals . Did you know how many prego dogs are killed everyday by people or vets or shelters TONSSSSSSSSSS  us rescues take in prego females from Owners, strays and we give puppies a chance for life .

Puppies

AUTHOR: chrystll owens - ()

We have contracts that protect private rescue thats why you sign them. And this is the first time i heard of another puppy being alive besides the one i have here which was tested for parvo and did have it but showed no signs and Still does not after 2 wks of being tested, Besides in our contract it is anything wrong the pup is to be returned to us and for 2 of the pups they was just flat murerded NO treatment , NO phone call or anything, And BTW ZED never once did i say i did my own pups tails or declaws NEVER once .

And yes rescues do get in not only mutts but purebreds to. So just because i get in purebreds i am a breeder hummmmmmm well then i guess all the pure bred rescues are to huh. Well you girls can talk about me and my rescue all you want slander my name and call and talk to whom ever you want. Still does not change the fact that that at the time the pups left my house they was all fine and running around and to my knowledge healthy.  And Zed sense the puppy is doing good now you will not be getting back a refund,

So sick and tired of people passing judgement without proof . First i am a breeder second all my dogs are sick lol thats a funny one and the breeder part just kills me. anyone that knows me and have been with me and been here can tell you that you are barking up the wrong tree. so like a coon hound at the wrong tree please move on to another because there is nothing here for you and if you feel the need to keep on talking about me go ahead please have a ball sense you have nothing else to do all day.

Oh and BTW it is Caring Canine Animal Rescue

Thank you,

Puppy

AUTHOR: Beth - ()

I'm so glad to hear that your puppy survived! That is the first good news to come out of this whole mess. I spoke to someone from the Board of Animal Health last week. He was going to check out Chrystll's facility the next day. He was very upfront with me that there is little he can do because she is a "rescue" and not a registered breeder. It's really unfortunate that someone can get away with inhumane treatment of animals because they are a "rescue".

Chrystll is still refusing to refund our $250 adoption fee. She hasn't denied knowing the puppies had parvo (or had at the very least been exposed to it) when she sent them home or when we were emailing her asking why our puppy was lethargic and not eating. Her most recent email to my husband stated that she didn't have to refund our deposit and that she didn't appreciate me putting information about her online. While I would certainly like the $250 back, I don't mind giving it up if it means that maybe one future adopter will see these comments online and rethink getting an animal from her. I just wish there had been something like this out there when we were thinking about adopting a dog from her.

It happened to us too

AUTHOR: Zed - ()

I have been searching the web for a place where I can report this so called rescue.

I have found the puppy on Petfinder as well. Christll told me that puppies are going to be ready for collection on 8.6. at 7 weeks old. They were to have their first vaccination and veterinary health certificate (as it states on caring canine animal rescue website).

The puppy was 6 weeks old on the 8.16. when I collected him. Christll told me that the puppies had their tails docked and dewclaws removed by the vet. She said that they recieved 4 days of antibiotics as they had a cold. Explained that they were seen by the vet who said its due to differences in the temperatures and that they are fine and he vaccinated them the day before. She went on to say that the vaccine can sometimes make them sick and that with the puppies this young you never know which way it will go.

I am veterinary technician. I listened and knew that she is lying. As I felt that there is something that she is trying to hide I asked about the mother and the father and what makes them rescues? She wouldnt give me a straight answer. Any answer in fact.

Before I left the centre my puppy vomited. In the car on the way home he vomited again and had diarhea so I took him straight to the vet and requested parvo test. He tested positive so we started agressive treatment before full blown clinical signs. I rang Christll the same day and told her that my puppy tested Parvo positive. Asked her to contact people and inform them that the puppies have been exposed to the virus and to start the treatment on the remaining puppies. She didnt sound surprised or bothered by the news. Infact I found out afterwards that she rehomed another sick puppy which unfortunately didnt make it either. It was a touch and go for our puppy. He was very sick, treatment was expensive but he survived.

I requested the name and number of the vet that looked after the puppies and gave them the clear bill of health and was told that the puppies havent been to the vet and that she vaccinated them herself. There is still a question of their tails and dewclaws. Has she operated on them herself? If that is the case it is animal cruelty and needs to be investigated.

Chrystll has a number of small dogs but none of them have been put up for adoption. She seems to be having unusual number of purebred and designer puppies for adoption. At the same time as having this Bugs she had a litter of purebred chihuahua puppies and a litter of purebred pugs on the way. That seems a bit unusual to me.

I wouldnt get another dog from her.

trying to get the word out

AUTHOR: Beth - ()

I have been emailing with petfinder.com to make sure they are aware of the situation. I'm hoping they will stop allowing her to advertise on their site. I've also emailed with the local Humane Society, and they verified that they have received other complaints about this woman. Also emailed the local Animal Board of Health contact. I'm considering filing a fraud report with sheriff's department, as well. She still claims that the mother dog was a rescue and not intentionally bred. However, we do know that she was aware on 8/16 that the puppies had been exposed to parvo and didn't alert the adopters. And she was aware on 8/18 that three of the five puppies had parvo (two euthanized and one being treated but not in good shape). Yet on 8/18 she posted the last puppy on petfinder.com with no warning about the parvo exposure at all. I'm hoping people will share this information far and wide on FB, twitter, etc. I want other adopters to be aware of the type of "rescue" they are supporting. I wish we would have known.

sorry to read what happened to you...

AUTHOR: justmythoughts - ()

Just going through reading reports and came across yours. I am so very sorry what happened to your puppy. that is so sad what this lady did to you and the other families and puppies. I would try and report her to the local humane athority in your area and post ads on as many sites as you can to try to warn people. I am sure there is a good chance the mother would have this as well.  I have seen cases of parvo and know that if you bring a puppy or dog home that has it, you have to wait a YEAR before adding another puppy or dog that isnt vaccinated in your house, yard anywhere. Please make sure that if your friends bring their dog by for a visit they are up to date on shots - just to be safe -

I do know that you can buy vaccines and give them to your animals yourself, NOT RABIES, but if the dog had the virus and she gave the puppy a vaccine it wont help it because the shots have a small live part of parvo in the shot and that is why for puppies they always tell people to vaccinate them a few times because it lets their body adjust to the virus and build up immunity to it.

This makes me so mad that a person would do this to an animal. And you know what makes it worse?? This lady has the mom, so she was prolly there when the puppies were born and helped to wean them and she did not care one bit about the poor babies health. That type of person should NOT be allowed to own ONE animal, let alone  breed them.
