The trans-axle differential had to be replaced at a cost of $1,750. When the trans-axle work was done they found the rear brakes were shot and needed replaced for $450.
This week I had to have the front right bearing replaced at a cost of $800.
When you buy a used car with only 50,000 miles you 'trust' the dealer to have sold you a good quality car. So much for their 125+ point inspection.
No, I did not buy the extended warranty because I've owned enough cars in my life to know that it's more of a marketing gimmick than anything. In buying a car from a dealer I expect the dealer to have done it's part in making sure the car is in good working order. Sadly, this was not the case. I called the dealer to tell them about the problems and all I got was "you didn't buy the extended warranty" line and not a concern for the problems with the car. I would not recommend anyone to purchase from Carmax.

Don't buy the warranty gimmick.

POSTED: Monday, June 11, 2012I'm not surprised that a car salesman would advocate them, though. The warranties generate about 75% profit and pays a hefty commission.

Not all car salesmen are bad

POSTED: Sunday, June 10, 2012Owning so many cars you might have thought to look up reviews on the car before you bought it. Jeeps are horrible. When it was at Carmax I can tell you that the breaks and everything else in that car was perfectly fine though. You know how I know it was fine? Cause when you buy it they give you 30 days to come back if anything is wrong and they will fix it for free. Obviously you didn't have anything happen within the first 30 days else you wouldn't be complaining that you had to pay for it yourself now would you?
Next time get the warranty. On that car it probably would have cost you $2300 for an additional 75,000 miles of coverage. That would have more then paid for your repairs and any other ones that came up.
And before you ask, yes I am a FORMER employee of Carmax. I was a Sales Consultant. And guess what? Even before I started working there I always bought the extended warranty and I never regretted it. Saying no to the warranty is like saying no to car insurance, cause eventually something is going to happen that you need both of them for, no matter how many inspections are done.

Not strictly a Carmax issue.

POSTED: Wednesday, June 06, 2012Seriously? Normally the words "trust" and "car dealer" are only used together in jokes. As a group, car salesman did not earn their slimy reputation by being trustworthy.
When you buy a used car of any vintage, you have to get it inspected by a trusted mechanic BEFORE you buy it. If you choose not to do this, you're just rolling the dice with your money. Any problems that occur after you drive off the lot with an "as is" purchase are your problems. Knowing that, you can see that there is no substitute for getting your own inspection.
You're correct about extended warranties. They're usually not worth the paper they're printed on. They are most often used by slimy dealers to reassure people who are about to buy a piece of junk without an independent inspection. Only later do they find out that nothing that breaks is covered. By then, the salesman has long collected his commissions.
